Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I took the day off on 12/19 so I'm heading up Mt. Diablo in the morning.
Anyone want to come (and lead the way:))?

The numbers of us that have never been up Diablo are getting very few. (I'm sure Alan has been up.)

Hmmm.....hmmm.....12/19, eh...hmmm...I might have to work from home that day...hmmm...
Damn it, just saw the Company calendar and it's our Holiday Party, starting at 11:30! What kind of party starts that early in the morning!?!?
Perhaps you're thinking of starting early? If that's the case, I can try to do a out-and-back and still make it to work on time?
I hate it when work cuts into riding.

Not sure. If anyone wanted to carpool I can drive to where people normally start... Perhaps the same route you guys took this past weekend.

Looks like I am in as well. I tried my hand at Mt. Diablo for the first time last Saturday with all our fellow BFer's and I think I am addicted!! I think I have made my peace with being a climber, not a sprinter..:)

I would like to join you all, I could meet you at Blackhawk Starbucks or the entrance to Athenian School.
Let me know what time as I will be cycling from Livermore.

Henry, yes, it is on the way. Btw, in case anyone is interested, I took the liberty of modifying the original bikely route to match the route we took last Saturday (includes the route through Walnut Creek that Jim/Benridin guided us through). The coffee shop is about 8 and a quarter miles into the route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/227737).

Awesome! I was wondering where exactly that shortcut had taken us :)

You might prefer the more straight-forward and quieter route (MUP) on the other side of Ygnacio:

It goes by Countrywood Shopping Center which has a great burrito shop plus Jamba, Starbucks, Safeway, even <gasp> donuts!.

The idea riding the designated route, was twofold. One to show the riders another alternative to the (dreaded) MUP, and personal, I just don't trust MUP's. I often feel they are a hazard.

But people get lost back there in the suburban ranch homeland you took them through. I just wanted them to know there's another way that's easy to remember in case they do it again without you. Plus, Homestead has got to be more hazardous than the Canal Trail.

I think it would be fortuitous to have a one...Diablo Scott lead the Gladiators into battle at some point...is this a prophecy of which I speak?:innocent:
Alas, I can't make this one - Christmas party at the Beaklets school. Can't miss out on that.

Is this ride still happening? I noticed that there is snow on top of Diablo, will it still be open?

I guess it depends on whether the road is still closed or not. We should know more tomorrow I think.

According to the road closure hotline recording, summit road is closed at Juniper campground (3000', 2 miles from the top).

Hmm. Well, I'll have to tackle the devil at a later date.
How long is your dentist appt? Want to stop in San Bruno an ride up to the appt?
I do have to be back for festivities by 2:30 or so, any suggestions?

Henry,
I would have loved to have done Diablo tomorrow with you, but I too have a company Christmas party at noon. I will be riding before work tomorrow and hope to do San Bruno if the weather is not too bad. If it's not raining I'll be at the start (Guadalupe at Bayshore) at 8AM.

But we can still wish you Happy Birthday!!!

I'll keep and eye on the weather. I may just hit up San Bruno mountain in the AM if it's not raining. I was able to ride to the top finally yesterday... it took me 26.5 minutes on the Univega and fighting headwind (and a couple of extra pounds) :(

Well, no 8am San Bruno Hill climb here. Just got up.

I think I've ridden San Bruno Mountain (race route) at least 50 times this year and I can't recall very many occasions that I didn't have to fight the wind somewhere on that climb.

Thanks, we'll have to do something special for our big 40th next year. I'm thinking Hamilton or Diablo (maybe both!).
It will be on a Saturday, so no excuses. :D
I wanted to do San Bruno this morning, and was going to go with Tim, but it was raining so we called it off. I just stayed close to home and grinded out 3 x twin peaks on my single speed.

There was hardly any wind this morning around 9:20 when I got there. I still sucked going up. That last 3/4 mile where is starts becoming 9%, then 10%, then 11% and 12% _really_ kill. I should have tried it on my road bike but the ground was still wet so I opted for the Univega again.
Where is the official finish line? The parking lot at the very end?
Sounds like you got a good morning in - to me it's all about getting past that cursed hairpin.
