I was at the Running Room (http://www.runningroom.com/hm/) just yesterday and the store employee told me about a new product material (I think it is new) that will heat up as you sweat.
He pulled out some of the material, pured water on it and sure enough, it got surprisingly warm.

The material is available in gloves, hats and socks right now and I do believe a long underwear will be available soon.
In this case I was looking at the socks, it IS only a thin material but I wonder if it is worn as a base layer with a thicker sock over it will it work? I dropped some hints to my wife and perhaps I'll get a pair for Xmas.....
