Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I recently purchased an old specialized fsr enduro, and it needs alot of work. I'm gonna use it for some trail riding in the low country of south carolina. It needs brakes and new drivetrain. This is my first mountain bike and I'm not very familiar with the gearing. I've looked at some cranksets online and I don't know if I need a 1x1, 2x2, or 3x3. I also dont know if I need an 8 or 9 speed cassette. I'm not going to be doing any major climbing on the bike. I would like some input on what some of my options are. Is a $300 budget realistic? Appreciate the help.

$300 is realistic. Your shifters may be useable. You could just replace the chain, rings, and cassette. I like 1x9 and 2x9 with a bash. I don't use the big ring b/c I'm afraid to break the 20mph sound barrier.

Post some pic's of the componentry that is on it and maybe we can steer you in the right direction.

(what year is it?)

Thanks for the reply. I have no idea of the year on the bike. I also don't have a digi-cam to take pics. I've been looking at pricepoint.com and blueskycycling.com and found a few things. What do you think? Thanks again.
