Hi,

I'm heading south for the christmas vacations to train and take advantage of the hot weather, far away from Quebec's snow and unfriendly temperatures. I am wondering if there is anyone over there who knows about training/group rides. I'll have a car so I can go wherever the meeting point is even if it's not near by bike.

I was there last year and had a really nice time, riding along the sea, boca grande, englewood. I am curious to discover knew rides. Any suggestions of calm roads in the region?

Thanks

Nicolas

Lots of different rides.

Ft Myers is about 20 minutes south of Punta Gorda.

http://www.coastalcruisers.net/ is a great group of mostly older folks who hold regular rides in the north Charlotte county and south Sarasota county area. This is about 25 minutes north of Punta Gorda. The rides have very different paces, so it's a good idea to listen closely to the announcements before the packs head out.

http://cyclehaus.us/page.cfm?pageID=37 has maps to some good rides in the area. These roads are mostly very desolate, though; good idea to pack extra food, water, and some kind of mapping device. Once you get out in the less-inhabited parts of Charlotte county, all the roads begin to look the same.

yes, those streets all look the same!! last year I was carying maps with me of the area, helped me once or twice when I got lost :P

I'm looking for some fast (>20mph) group rides to train and meet people. I race here in Quebec and am looking for long rides to bump my endurance, or shorter but faster rides. It's always easier to push yourself with others than alone, and have more fun! any clubs or group rides would suit me best?

Sure, I'd suggest going on one of the A group rides with Coastal Cruisers. See the link I posted above. They'll carry 22+mph for dozens of miles. It's always a good time, but I get a little leery when lots of tandems show up; those guys (and gals) can carry the pack up to higher-than-expected speeds.

It's a friendly bunch, when you show up, just tell them you're looking for the "fast group." :) You've chosen the right time of year to ride; should be fun.
