uh, it's actually pretty informative (for those unfamiliar with a fixed gear) and pretty reasonable.

I really shouldn't have read your post based solely on your name and the fact that you use the "word" "fixy" but i decided to and read the article and I see absolutely nothing wrong with the article written that you linked to. in fact i would say its almost 100% accurate. now the real question is... what did you see wrong with what he said?

I dont really see what he said that you have a problem with. It seems like his intention was to explain fixed to people who casually or don't ride.

If you hate my bikes that's cool with me... If you tell me that because of my bike I drink my coffee like the soccer mom that takes 5 minutes to order her drink.... That is something else.

I though the author nailed it spot on. Fixed gear riding is a fad.

Maybe to you but a lot of people have been riding fixed as a means to train in the off-season. so don't lump all of us with the skinny-pant wanna-be-messengers trend sheep!

I'm sorry but I just don't really understand why there is so much hate attached to fixed gear/hipsterness.

First off I'm a little confused to what hipster means at this point because it seems to be applied to anybody who is white, under 30, lives in urban area, and sort of "edgy"

To me as long as people are riding their bikes, why is that not a good thing?
I admit I've only been riding a fixed gear bike less than a year.
Does that make me trendy,a hipster, or just stupid for it taking me 5 years to give in to the fact that a bike is a much easier, faster (and fun) way to get around Brooklyn. Maybe the "trend" of people riding fixed gear bike caught on because..... god forbid
It makes sense.
- cheap, less maintenance, good for start/stop city riding, keeps you aware of your surroundings
best of all a new perspective on the old joy of riding a bicycle
As with anything that becomes popular some will hop on for the wrong reasons and quit after a few months and others will stick with it for a lifetime.
I grew up skateboarding most of my life and as I've seen it become more mainstream, I've only thought it was good for the sport more than anything else.

I wish people would be a less self-aware and just do their own thing.

By the way I see waaaaayyyyy more vintage, crappy, geared bike around here than fixed.
And I live in Williamsburg.

Common sort of article. The only thing that really bugs me (sensationalism is to be expected and ignored), is that the comments on these types of articles are ALWAYS very homophobic, misogynistic, anti-intellectual, and above all out of touch with what is considered mainstream vs. hip (or avant garde I suppose).

Example of the kind of characterization I always read:
·male (girls don't ride bikes, duh!)
·mid 20's
·liberal (since when is liberal a bad word?)
·rides a track bike (err...anti-environmental? The only thing wrong with bikes is that there aren't enough people on them.)
·tight jeans (homophobia! hide that bulge or we'll beat the **** out of you!)
·frequents the local art scene (since the art scene is...conformist? really?)
·effeminate qualities (misogyny, woo!)
·drinks lattes at a mainstream coffee shop (or more rarely, organic free trade and independent)
·messenger bag (but not the kind we use, but a "man purse")

Sorry for the rant, but I'm sorry for anyone who doesn't see this kind of verbal garbage as an intersection of a lot of awful sentiments.

Feel free to dismember this post or the author herself.

I think you need to re-read the original article.

The guy seems to have a problem with a lack of freewheel and lack of brakes, all combined with lack of skill. He has a problem with people adopting a type of bike/riding because it is perceived to be fashionable and not because the newbie is capable or safe doing it.

My interpretation is that he is expecting someone to get seriously hurt in a bike crash because of following a fashion.

There is no sensationalism in the article, nor is there any hate (as previous posters and the OP suggest).

CTFD folks.

Hmm, I'm white and live in the 'burbs, but I'm in my 50's and sort of 'cuddly', does this mean I have to hand back my Hipster Membership Badge?

it just simply states that fixed gear bicycles are the new "Thing" and are quite dangerous if you are not experienced.
