What the hell is wrong w/ people? She got jumped by 2 guys. Unfortunately for them, she is a black belt in Tang Soo Do. She dropped one w/ a groin kick & got a strike in on the other one before mall security got them. Be careful out there, foo. :(

I so wish that mall security spread eagled mugger number two so she could kick his bag as well. Robbers are scum, no matter if they wear a ski mask or a three piece suit.

How soon before the robbers sue her for beating them up............

Sorry to hear that. My wife walks to a car alone several nights a week at night in a rough neighborhood. She had a student threaten her yesterday because he is failing and he "has a history" as it is.

As if I wasn't already paranoid enough....

good for her!
I hope those two idiots get the book thrown at them and get some real time behind bars.

Good for her. She didn't panic and her training/muscle memory kicked in. Just being a BB in any art doesn't mean that they are ready for "realistic" application of what they have learned.

Was she shopping at Borders? Hope she bought some hardbacks.

Dunno. She had to give a statement, I don't know if mall security called the local police. I would think so, since it was a mugging, but who knows?

Hehehe, so who mugged who? Good for her! Security should have turned their backs and let her finish the job

Attempted mugging. When you get your arse handed to you by your target, you have failed your selected task.

I agree with cohophysh; security should just chalk that one up to "Well, that's what you get" and leave 'em there in the parking lot.

Nah, I'm glad that she had training & that security was around, but she's exhibiting the same kind of PTSD type stuff I was after I got mugged. Real uncool, thank God her daughter wasn't w/ her.

Glad she kicked the snot out of those guys.
I want to learn some kind of martial art--leaning
towards Krav Maga.

That's horrible that she got mugged, but what a woman to pick! I'm glad she kicked their sorry, cowardly asses. It makes me want to take that kick boxing class I've been thinking of taking.

Security should have turned their backs and let her finish the jobAfter she left them in a quivering mass on the ground, she should have taken their wallets.

I really want to do judo. At 5'5" and 125ish I could bust anyone up and get away with it as self defense. :D

Glad your friend was able to defend herself.

My sentiments exactly.

There should also be an article in the paper with mugshots of the perps and the headline "Violent Criminals Humiliated."

And the judge should preface his sentencing by saying, "I recognize that it was extremely humiliating for not one, but two of you to get your butts kicked by a girl, and with the element of surprise nonetheless, but I am still sentencing you to..."

First of all, good for her!

Second, I need to vent about her choice of style.

Having studied that same form in my younger years, I think I am some what qualified to make the assessment that it was years of sparring that enabled her to beat down these pricks, not the style itself. Tang Soo Do is really a ridiculous fighting style, as is most of Karate. They teach you to do one thing, then tell you after years of stupefying practice that "oh, in a real fight, throw straight, quick punches, and keep your hands up in front of your face". This is idiotic. You should practice how you plan to fight, and cut out the horse ****.

While I am now a firm believer in carrying a gun and solving these kinds of problems permanently, good unarmed combat skills are always important. I think significantly better fighting practice can be had from kick boxing, kung fu, or even boxing. And of course my favorite is no nonsense self defense classes patterned after the unarmed combat training of the US military.

Krav Maga. Down and dirty win at all costs fighting.

Things like this happen in DC all the time, especially lately. Crime's on the increase because there are lots of lazy people out there with no money and no conscience. Everyone should carry their most valuable possessions (cell phone, wallet, keys) on their person (i.e., under their clothes or in some concealed location). Other items that aren't worth much or can be easily replaced (iPOD, books, papers, etc) can be put into a "dummy bag." It's a trick most people use in cities where crime is rampant. My grandmother lived in the Bronx all her life. She was mugged several times, but the thugs never got more than a purse full of kleenex.

There are lots of good styles, and most will eventually lead you to being some what capable of fending off attackers without getting too badly hurt. I've heard especially good things about Krav Maga too. I just don't think anyone in their right mind should study karate.

I have no practical experience with any formal training--
big caveat. I have practical experience fending off people
who jumped me. After a lot of consideration I decided that
most highly formal schools of martial arts are no guarantee
of safety (like your conclusion on karate). The down and dirty
fighting that is used to train military and spec ops people
seems more applicable. If someone is trying to hurt you the
point is not to execute rigid forms and movements perfectly
but to win. Throw sand in their face, gouge their eyes,
hand claps over the ears to burst eardrums, take out their
knees--whatever. Take the opponent down so you can walk away.

/end hijack.

Exactly! Or as I advocate, shoot the jerks. By any means a person feels comfortable, the bottom line is to be ready to neutralize any threat that might arise.
