Bicycle Mechanics - Bleeding Hayes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey there,
Recently, my Hayes HFX-9 rear brake has been making this bubbly sound everytime I squeeze the lever. Its on my freeride bike which hasnt been ridden in a few months due to the weather. It did leak a bit of the DOT fluid, but only a little. Is it time for a bleed? These brakes don't have THAT much use, less than 6 months.
Any input would be great,
Byron

Your probably going to have a million problems with those brakes, their junk.
Yea they are crap, but they were super cheap through pro deal and I barely ride this bike anymore. So as long as they stop me, their cool.

If any brake fluid got out, you can pretty much bet that some air got in. Bleeding a Hayes disc brake is pretty easy. It helps if you have somebody to hold the bleed hose submerged while you push the new fluid in from the bottom. Try not to get any brake fluid on the paint.
My two 20-something sons both have Hayes disc brakes on their freeride bikes. They don't seem to have any complaints or negative comments about them. If anybody could find a way to break their brakes, I'd think those two boys would do it. They definitely do some things on their bikes that I'm not sure that I approve of.
Haha, I never pull stunts in front of my rents, my trials riding scares them enough.
Thanks for the input.
