Tried a search but found only lots of posts WRT front lights and handlebar bags.

What do I do if I want to put a rear rack bag? Dont want to put the light on the bag as I can imagine it will flip flop around. I saw one pic here of it being mounted on the fork but that will not be as visible from the other side.

Any suggestions?

Get a rack bag with some kind of mount for the rear light. My saddle bag effectively blocks the rear light mount on the seat post. The bag itself has a place for rear light, so I use that when I'm riding with the bag. If I ride without the bag, I put the light on the seat post mount.

Planet Bike sells a rack mount for the Superflash. Works really well and only costs a few $$$.

+1 to both of these comments. Planetbike's rack mount (I use if for a Blinky 5 since it doubles as a reflector) is solid. Also, most trunk bags that have a rear light mount area are fairly stiff in said area so you'll experience little to no flop.

Thanks guys. I live in India and cant order these things easily. I just asked a friend to get me some Cateye headlights, taillights and cadence computer. Cant really ask him for bags etc. and my next visit to the US is not for another 6 months.

I was thinking of getting a local bag made. There is a guy here who makes to order camera and lens bags as good as Lowepro.

Now I was thinking of just getting panniers so that the rack top can still be used, and I get more usable space and I can add a saddle bag too for tube and tools.

So does a pannier just flop on top of the rack? Are they 'anchored' in any way on the sides? And will it affect my brake cable as it runs down the side? I have a Trek 4300.

Thanks for all the help.

Regards,

Deepak

So I've got a Cannondale trunk bag that has the same sort of reinforced-fabric loop that my Topeak under-saddle bag has, so if I'm using the trunk bag, I just move the light that's normally under my saddle to the trunk bag.

The Cannondale bag is reinforced so that it doesn't flop.

I also have a taillight screwed into the back of the rack.

Bolt a piece of wooden dowel to the rack, then mount the taillight to the dowel.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Planning panniers now and will try to leave the rack frr so the seatpost light will be visible [as well as the reflector]. In addition I am putting a light on the back of the rack.

Most taillights can be mounted on a seatstay.

If you have a rack with a reflector mount on it, cateye makes a mount to attach to the rack which then works with the clip mechanism on some of their lights. You have to get it from the small parts store and its $5 USD plus shipping, but it works well. Figure on at least a week or two for delivery... slow as molasses.
