Well, in the midst of all the other stuff going on, my wife and I continue to be the local magnets for lost dogs. My wife found this little gal running in traffic on Monday morning and scooped her up off the street. She looks to be a malamute, maybe about 5 or 6 months old. Unfortunately, this one can't stay. While she's really very well behaved, especially for a puppy, her presence has thrown the pack dynamic at my home for a loop. My Great Pyrenees (Rocky, who has his own thread in Foo), is not at all pleased with having the competition. Plus, I think the homeowners association would frown on five dogs at one house.
At any rate, for the time being I've dubbed her "Tootsie."

yeahhh I think I'm in love:o
Those dang shiba pups have softened up the ol man's heart this fall:rolleyes:
Only thing - could she be lost? I can't imagine how such a beautiful dog would just be left out on her own.
Than again, with some owners out there...........:notamused:
she's got to belong to someone.

I think she does, and I'm making efforts to find that person. Unfortunately, she had a collar but no tags. My wife found her literally about three blocks from my home, so I've already plastered that area with flyers, we're calling all the local vets today, and I've got flyers posted at a bunch of local businesses. Sadly, I've been down this road before. Once a dog is lost, if he/she has no tags, it's very difficult to find the owner.

She's really cute!
Still, I bet she's lost, rather than abandoned.
I know you must be looking for the owners. Is she chipped?

Idk how, but if the owner doesn't materialize, i think i might have to do this.
I should probably talk to the wife (and my cats) first:rolleyes:
but pls keep me in the loop, if possible. (You have enough on your mind already).

Did you ask the vet to scan for a chip? Out here we all have to have chips now.

what a beautiful dog! I'd have a hard time not keeping her if the owner couldn't be found, too. I imagine you won't have much trouble finding her a home.
Is there a standard for how long you look for the owner before giving it up for lost?
I know puppy origami, I can fold her up like a swan or a rowboat, and you send her to Pgoat.

I haven't been able to get her to the vet yet, what with the drama of the last couple days. I have my doubts about her being microchipped because (1) there wasn't even a tag, and a tag comes with the chip and (2) she's so young. But I'll be taking her to get checked out just to cover all bases.

did it hurt when they chipped you Siu?

Just use Siu's credit card to ship, pls - you already maxed mine out.
And I'll need instructions for unfolding.

I'm wondering if it was a pup that was awaiting chip and got out somehow. I'd be devastated and heartbroken if this little gal was missing from my home:(
Thanks for taking care of her...you are amazing for handling this, with your wife to also think about.:)

She is adorable!!! I hope you find the owners but if you don't, I hope you find a good home for her. I'd take her in a heartbeat, but I'd have to clear it with teh kitteh and my mum first.

If you go with the rowboat option, you might want to leave it folded. I mean a dog is nice, but a rowboat is nice too. All my origami is life size.
How close are you to Nashville? Have you taken this one in to the vet to have her scanned for a chip?

If I'm not mistaken, Malamutes and Huskies are known for killing cats. So if anyone adopts her, please be careful about that.
also check the local Shelter and ask if anyone reported her missing.
She sure is a cute l'il ol thang. If we didn't have a malinois on the way
I'd be putting my name in the hat for her.

Take her to the vet and see if they can scan her for a chip. My sister and I found a stray over the weekend, and I called the humane society. She did have a Rabies tag, but nothing else, and they didn't have a record of the tag number in their system. The humane society came out, scanned her, and found a chip, so she should make it home safe. :D
Edit: oops, someone already suggested it.

If I had my house right now, I'd take her in a heartbeat, seriously. I can't have a dog in the condo tho.

Just took Tootsie to the vet for scanning. No chip.
Her owner's status has now been officially downgraded from "careless" to "stupid." :notamused:
I need mapquest coordinates pls:o

Like I said before, I'm 1,600 miles away. (Texas) Better get started.
Hey pgoat - I'll do the drive with you. Trading on and off we could leave on a Friday and be back before Monday.

Hmmm....road trip, two drivers....add some scotch and chocolate- I mean some chocolate....yeah, I think it's gonna be okay:)
let's talk later:D
You got it - next few weeks are rough for me but I'm sure we can figure out something. Maybe even a day in there for some scotch :)
I also wonder if maybe we can make a bit of a chain, pass the pup through the country from one BFer to another to cut a few hundred miles off.

now you're cookin' with some serious ca-ca
My wife 'the animal lover' said, sure we can take her - just throw her on a plane:eek::eek:
:notamused:
Plane could work too but the story wouldn't be nearly as interesting...

and the scotch would create problems...how big are those zip-loc baggies again?
Where in Texas is said dog? I'm going to be doing some
driving cross state tomorrow (DFW to Balmorhea). I could start the chain.
Marty
wow
and so it begins....:)

Said dog is in Houston, so you're going the wrong way!
So I just take 10 straight across then cut up 45

The latest news is that I thought I had Tootsie placed with a good family as late as yesterday. Unfortunately, that's fallen through. It seems our little girl has a health problem--cataracts. They're not affecting her vision right now, but the folks who were looking to adopt her just lost a much beloved German shepherd, and they understood from talking to their vet that cataracts can be an indicator of diabetes. Anyway, since they have young kids, they didn't want to take the chance. It's too bad. The kids met Tootsie and my other dogs over the weekend and really seemed to like her.
She's not showing any other symptoms of diabetes--no excessive weight or anything like that. Anyway, it's just kind of disappointing, especially when the rest of the report card on her is so good. She's between one and two years old, heartworm negative, etc. Oh, well. Keep trying, I guess.
I'm in heavy duty summit meetings with teh wife right now regarding the fate of Tootsie and a possible NY relocation...conclusive details expected by day's end
One-two years?
wow - she looks tiny...what her height & weight?
bluebottle1
12-09-08, 08:45 AM
I haven't measured her height, but she's not more than about 20 inches or so. As far as weight, she can't be more than 35-40 lbs.
I was convinced orginally that she is a malamute. I'm not so sure now. I suspect she is a mix of malamute and husky. She has a husky tail but she carries it up, like a malamute. Her bark is pure malamute, but her size is husky. Both huskies and mals are subject to juvenile cataracts, so that doesn't really help figure things out.
Let me know, pgoat. If we can find a way to get this little girl transported, she's yours as far as I'm concerned. I think she'd do really well in the colder climes up north.

People who don't put a tag on the collar with at least a phone number are irresponsible in my book.
Even a rabies tag makes it possible to find the owner.
