So I have been going through all the threads about warm shoes and one thing is missing, what if you don't use clipless/spd? I ride cages and straps, don't like clipless, and the only coldness I get are the tips of my toes. booties don't work, they get shredded up by my cages, and boots won't fit in. Anyone have any ideas?

I searched the forums but everyone is only talking about clipless/spd.

There is a kind of toe grip that doesn't use a cage that works well with larger size shoes and boots. I think they are called powergrips or something like that.

The coldness you are experiencing is probably due to excessive localized pressure on the balls of your feet restricting blood flow to the toes. Do you have any problem with hot spots during warm weather riding? Different symptom, same cause.

Have you tried toe warmers? I use Grabber toe warmers inside my winter cycling shoes when the temps drop below 20°F. When I'm riding I think my toes are cold but when I get to the office and remove my shoes and socks my toes are warm and the socks are a bit damp. If I don't use the toe warmers my toes are sometimes reddish (rather than pink) and hypersensitive to the warm shower water so I know the toe warmers do something.

i was thinking booties would work ok with clips and straps i may just keep the straps a bit looser and they are plastic clips so they shouldn't shred the booties...i guess i just need to try some out for myself

yeah I figured its got something to do with less blood in my feet due to the straps, but even still, does anyone know of a windless/waterproof shoe that could work?

I don't recall ever having any hot spots this summer, never really heard of that.

You can try a pair of wind blocking thermal socks, such as these (http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-LUC-ACC.htm), and be sure your entire legs are covered and warm. Don't skimp on winter riding attire.
