I was playing around with installing themes the other day after patching with Uxtheme and one of the themes messed up how my computer downloads and I don't know how to change it back (changing themes doesn't fix it).
Anyway, this is what happened:
Usually, when I click on something to download, I get the prompt to Open/Save/Cancel the download. Nothing unusual.
But, now, instead of getting a prompt, my computer automatically downloads and opens the TEMP folder on its own. Then when I drag the downloaded item to my desktop, it prompts me to copy the file to the new location.
If I click on something and "Save target as..." then I get the prompt to Open/Save/Cancel like usual.
Sorry I don't have screenshots.
Anyone have any idea what I am talking about and can help me fix the issue?
A Google search didn't help because I have no idea what to search for exactly...

what browser?
you probably clicked the "do this every time I download"
should be a simple undo, if thats the case.

IE7.
It happened just after I installed a theme and clicked to download another one, but it was fine when I downloaded the theme which I then installed before clicking the next one, during which I noticed the change. Hmmm...

You are good at this stuff. Here is one for ya. How do you get paint and spitoon juice out of silk undies. At least I think they are silk, but you know what the fabric is anyway, right?

Do you know about System Restore?
Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
It's often useful when you've made changes and screwed things up, and don't know exactly what you did.
From the Help and Support Center description:
System Restore overview
System Restore is a component of Windows XP Home Edition that you can use to restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail). System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). You can also create and name your own restore points at any time.
Notes
Restoring your computer does not affect or change your personal data files. It is a good idea to back up your data files periodically. For example, you might copy your data files to removable media, such as a writable compact disc, once a week.
For an overview of the other recovery technologies provided with Windows XP, see Recovering Your System.
For more information about System Restore, see Understanding System Restore.
It doesn't fix everything, but it's gotten me out of messes on numerous occasions.

I found my answer on Google. Of course it took extreme creativity to get the right words out to get a result, but I found it.
It's something that a simple registry hack can fix. :)
