General Cycling Discussion - How many mid range manufacters are there really?

Outside of Cannondale and some Trek models, how many folks actually can make bicycles in the mid-price catagory? Just curious. That and the fact that most of the bikes at the LBS all look the same with different paint jobs.

Specialized, Giant, Bianchi, Gary Fisher, Fuji, Tommaso, and probably a bunch more out there. Most mid-range bikes consist of the same components anyway.

I know there are other brands, but I mean actual manufacturers. Kinda like the fact that Samuel Adams doesn't brew their beer. They buy brewing time at the Anhauser-Busch's of the world.

My LBS once told me 5 different companies make 90% of the bikes but with the way they change hands anymore I don't know if is or ever was true.

The vast majority (probably 95%) of bikes between $300 and 1500 or so, not sure
of the upper cutoff, are made in Taiwan. Bikes lower and somewhat higher than $300
can't be made profitably anywhere but China or Bangladesh. A few Chinese Ti frames
are trickling in the country also. Because of the volume the bikes are all made by a
couple of mega companies in Taiwan and rebranded by the respective importers,
which include Trek. Not sure about Cannondale's lowend bikes, but it would be hard
to make frames in the US for $500-1000 bikes. Bianchi ditto, they definitely rebrand
Taiwan frames at the lowend of their line. Steve

Oohh... maybe like, 3 in the lower-mid level.
The higher end stuff is probably made in house.
