Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Leds for home lighting?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I know they exist, but afaik they were expensive and not too powerfull. So, anybody knows if the newer leds like the CREE have made it to led lightbulb manufacturers yet? Is there a P7 bulb?

For high hat type downlights : http://www.creells.com/downloads/LR6_spec_072908.pdf
and here: http://www.environmentallights.com/shop/images/tech_specs/lr6.pdf
Pricey, about $90-100.
I don't think that the literature mentions what the actual LED is.
Looks like there are many types out there.
Like compact fluorescent lights, I would try to look at one in a lighting store, then try one at home before buying several.
Looks like I'm gonna have to go the DYI route if I want the latest LED tech... will lurk around that other forum to see what I can find... thx for the info.

Earth LEDs (http://www.earthled.com/products.html) tend to stay fairly current on LED tech, utilize CREE LEDs, and actually tend to be one of the more affordable solution (though still pricey).
They are out there but extremely expensive. I'm looking at doing some accent lighting like the little undercabinet puck lights for the kitchen and such.
I;m looking at bigger picture too, smaller lights in the kitchen like that, smaller ones around the perimerter of rooms, but going to run them all 12v back to a central source with 12v batteries so I have a emergency power out system. I'm going all automotive style, so think about the small dome/map lights in a vehicle where they can be turned on individually with the little buttons or all come on at once when you open the doors. I'm running three wires, one that can be switched then one that gets switched on when power goes out.
Next step is to buy some solar panels to charge the whole system.

You are reading my mind... that's exactly what I wanna do. Either getting the leds and driver boards from dealextreme or cannibalizing a few good/cheap flashlights (like the task force).
The beauty of it is that I could start with only one and keep adding lights later, as budget allows.
I'm thinking those little accent lights you see at lowes or HD, they are like 3-4: diameter and maybe 1" thick, look like hocky pucks. I'm going to buy low cost ones like that for the housings and put the leds in themn
