So, I've got this Martin DM I never learned to play and I put it away. What to do with the stand?

I'll take that Martin off your hands. And the stand. :D

I'll take the stand. But only if the wheel is attached.

I have a feeling I'm not going to get that Martin.

Say, I'll give you money for it, maybe. :)

I'll at least play a song for you on it. Oh man, Martin's make the sweetest sound. :) I'm an acoustic girl. This is my kind of aesthetic. :D

There is a group of people that get together for a bluegrass jam every Wednesday night at a pizza place. All those guys play are Martins.

Are you sure you want to let this baby sit in the garage? :)

what's a DM again?

A dreadnaught?

you should raffle it off on BF.

edit: or give it to Made in Italy.....

Hell, I'm not sure what exactly a DM is, but I'm betting its a sweet acoustic guitar. I know Martins, and they rarely go wrong!

this is true.

I once decided I was gonna buy an acoustic. I figured, no way I could afford a Martin, so I put it out of my mind. I went to a good music store and tried some Gibsons and finally settled on a fairly high-priced Guild. I was all set to put down a layaway deposit (gulp- this was a LONG time ago:o) and for the hell of it while the salesman wrote up the ticket i pulled a D-18 down and strummed one chord. I just told the guy forget it - I'd come back when i could afford the Martin.

The Guild was a fine instrument but there was just no comparison. I was blown away.....

I never did get that D18....if I won lotto I'd probably try to get an OM-28. I'm more comfy on the smaller bodies.

You know, it really doesn't matter as long as you're playing something that won't go out of tune on you every measure?

The only Martin I have is my baby. The backpacker. Some might consider it a inferior model, but to me, its perfect. It's been with me through thick and thin, it weighs hardly nothing, and it sounds great. How can it go wrong? :)

I don't play guitar.

I do have my father's guitar though. He gave it to me years ago and I have held on to it ever since. It will never be sold since I think of it as a memento more than anything. It is a Martin 00-18 from the late 50s. He was a strange guy. I never even knew he was a musician of any kind (even after I had already become one myself) until I heard him play some fingerpicking stuff ONCE. I guess he just decided to become a computer geek, and never play again. The he told me he played with Woody Guthrie when he was in college.

So maybe the musician thing does run in the family, although I sort of went the opposite way in terms of musical style.

wow - nice axe and a nice item to have from dad. Keep an eye on the neck/string tension and humidity if it's just sitting unused Grumpy

I'm sure the main difference between that and a full-size Martin is volume.

A friend of mine went and bought a $400 Martin (Import) with the smartwoods and a bolt on neck ()...the body was a full width dreadnought but shallower depth. It sounded a lot quieter than a full-size body but the neck played beautifully and it really had a very good tone imo.

As Shadiyah said, once you get into the decent range of instruments where they are stable the main difference probably lies with the player. Those backpackers are a great idea....I kinda want one myself.

I've seen Lou Reed make $4000 gtrs sound like a beginner's POS, and Bill Frisell make the reverse happen. Btw, I like both those guys equally well, but for different reasons.

That Martin needs a new home where it will feel loved and appreciated, stroked occasionally and made to vibrate. :)

I'm going to sell it and a nice spruce top Yamaha and try the cello. Someday I'll find an instrument I like. I love the sound of cello and my daughter plays the violin fairly well and my wife is a great piano player so we should have a fine trio..

I came across a nice guitar shop here the other day. A dangerous thing to find... the guy told me to come by any time "just to play" (a clever ruse...).

I don't know much about steel-stringed acoustics, but this thread makes me want to try a Martin. My dream guitar is probably a Tobias Berg (http://www.berg-guitars.de/english/gallery.php) -- the instruments are beautiful to listen to and look at, and I just like the way the guy talks about his guitars. I haven't had the chance to play one yet, unfortunately...

Berg's are beautiful guitars.... Do you play classical?

Taylors are nice playing acoustics but in my limited experience with steel string acoustics, Martin pretty much rule tone wise. Not the easiest axes to play but if you're used to a classical neck should be no problem other than the narrower width, esp. at nut.

I am gonna scan and post my dream gtr here - thanks for the reminder Gb!

Here's a nice Martin at Elderly Instruments (http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/10U-4783.htm) to drool over. I hadn't realized guitars got into classical instrument price ranges until I friend told me he played one at Elderlys that had a $100k price tag.

In the last two years Martins have jumped the shark like Gibsons and Fenders. Tripled in value.

There is a really interesting Antiques Roadshow episode where a guy brings in a rare original prlour guitar made by ine of the Martin Bros, signed, in great condition....they told him it wasn't worth very much and appraised it for $1000 bucks. Pretty much everybody in the music community agreed that he was being "had" and some even say that there are buyers on site at the Roadshow ready to write a check to a willing sucker that gets an artifical low estimate.

$1000.00 for a rare Martin. Ridiculous. The museum would have bought it for around seven times that.

Hell, my Chinese OM copy (no laminate) list for almost that much new.

Hell yes.

back in the 80s when Fenders were exploding (Les Pauls were already astronomical since the 70s) you could still buy a Gibson carved-top jazz guitar (acoustic f-hole with electric pickups, for those wondering) for under 5 figures.....no more. :( I would LOVE a Johnny Smith or L-5 but forget getting one of those now for less than $25k or so.....

Just as well I can't afford one, I am not in that league as a player anyhow.
