As many of you know, there has been a vicious bus strike here in the twin cities nearly a month already without an end in sight. Many of my friends/co-workers have been forced to ride their bikes as an alternative (and IMHO better) means of transportation. Now as the time progresses and people are realizing huffy/magna/new schwinn are not really the highest quality bicycles to be riding on an everyday commute. This being said, I find myself in the position of helping people get on better bicycles. This last weekend I scoured the goodwills here in the twin cities looking for suitable high quality bikes that just needed a little work. I got a nice 80's raleigh with perfect paint for 9.95 and a decent schwinn "shopping cart" cruiser bike 12.95. Really after a little truing of the wheels, shifting adjustments and replacement of brake pads, bar tape, all are in really nice shape. It really is quite amazing how many people just feel like throwing away such high quality bicycles, in turn by more SUVs.
I must say it is a nice hobby, fixing up bikes passing them off to my friends seeing them ride them. Too bad I cannot convince any of my Ecuadorian friends to ride single/fixed might give me more justification for spending my night in the basement/bike room.
Lastly, if any of you in the Minneapolis Area have bikes you no longer need, which you would rather put to good use, just send me a message. I know quite a few people who could use some better bikes.
Although don't let my wife see this message, she might protest to me having more bikes around here, if even for a temporary amount of time.
