Road Cycling - Looking for Rides in the Texas-Sugar Land Area

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone was from Sugar Land Texas (suburb of Houston) that was organizing rides in the area. I would like to do some group rides which reminds me.....why isn't there a category for this on this forum?? :p :p :p

cyclist7,

There is a subcatagory in General Cycling for Big Rides and Cycling Partners. I think
you could check there.
I don't know any organized rides in the Houston area, but I'd recommend you check
with a few LBSs in the area. thats where I hook up for organized rides up here, they
also should have a list of bike clubs in the area.
I did a search on TXBRA (Texas Bicycle Race assoc) and found this one:

First Colony Racing/SWCC - Kempner Ride
Day & TimeSaturday and Sunday 7:30am SHARP!! IntensityModerate to Very Fast - all levels present
DirectionsMeet at Kroger parkind lot at the Corner of West Airport and HWY6, at 7:30 on Saturdays and Sundays.
CommentsFriendliest group in town; Distances vary from 34 to 63(includes Simonton loop) miles; Check SWCC.CC for more information and time changes

Thats the only Sugarland ride listed but there are alot of Houston rides at
this link:

Google search: "Bicycle clubs Houston, Texas" resulted in a number of links
to the area, not necessarily racing as is the TxBRA link above. I suspect on
any given day of the week anywhere from 5 to 30 riders are out somewhere in
the area riding with advance arrangements by phone or email. You will have to
start with the larger groups and over several months, depending on your personality and riding skills you should be able to latch on to a lot of rides. Steve

Ft. Bend Fit is a group of runners, cyclists, triathletes, etc. It has a large group that organize different size rides. I live in Sugar Land, but really don't do too much large group riding(3-5 riders typically). They usually meet up in Pecan Grove and ride to Fulshear and throughout the area. Have you ever heard of them? Do you currently ride much in that area?

Hmmm....no I have not heard of them. I don't ride in Fulshear but I do ride around the Sugar Land area thats near Richmond. Every now and again I see some cyclists out in the area but its a rare site. Often when I do see one, I am in the car driving so I can't strike a conversation up.

It's rare to see cyclists around Richmond area? Hmmm. Every Sat. and Sunday you can expect to see a whole lot of riders(I always see about 50-75, large groups, small groups, singles, etc.) riding 359, 1463, 723, 1489, 1093, or any back road West of 99 Parkway. Some Sat. or Sunday morning ride around to Simonton, Fulshear, Orchard, Wallis, to Brookshire, to Katy Mills Mall. You'll see more a bunch. Except this weekend, they'll probably be doing the MS150.

My mom lived in Richmond, We rode with the Houston group out of Fulshire a few times. We also started at the shopping center near Pecan Grove and rode out to Brookshire. They have good shoulders on the roads there!

If you drive out Westheimer Rd. and hang a left on FM-99, you will see a community/subdivision entrance on your right (I forget the name). If you head back a few miles, past some home builders and a school, you can find a relatively expansive country roads that I have only begun exploring. At first I just went up and down a 5-mile stretch of road, and subsequently found it branches off considerably.

Which brings me to a question I have been meaning to ask - anyone who has ridden out here, have you encountered an 80s model jacked-up gray pickup with confederate flags on the back window? Have seen the damn thing twice in the last several rides, and both times it has aggressively tried to startle me - once by honking its horn while I was safely on the shoulder around a turn, and a second time the guy intentionally hit the gas hard enough to backfire right as he approached from behind. I'd like to find out who that guy is and have some words. Not sure if he's had a bad exp w/cyclists, but I am new to it, haven't done anything to provoke anyone in my relatively short time riding a road bike...

Cyclist7 - Have you checked out http://www.swcc.cc/new.php? They have a map on the site for rides from about 20-60 miles starting at Hwy6 and West Airport (at the Kroger). There are lots of groups that ride through Fulshear - there's one convenience store in particular that has so many cyclist at it on the weekends that is looks like a break point for a charity ride.

Towlie - I'll keep a look out for that truck. I have not had problems out there when I'm with a group. However, I've had some close calls riding out there solo. Last weekend some genius laid on the horn right as he passed within a foot of me going 60+. I followed him into a neighborhood but could not keep up.

Thanks -- the truck unfortunately does not have rear tags. It does not help that this area is near a prison (!). Sounds like the 60+ honker is buddies with the confederate truck guy. And to think I was just defending people from my girlfriend's criticism of rebel flag wavers recently...this one sure fits the stereotype she laid out though.

I am also thinking about hanging a small can of mace from my jersey - I saw enough wheel chasing dogs tonight...

If you bike Fulshear
The I-69 Trans Texas Corridor has been rerouted around Houston and will now go through either Fulshear or Sealy. The Fulshear route is along favorite bike route of 359, Winner-Foster road and through Fulshear. This is a huge project to bring NAFTA products to the US. TxDot will choose which route in the next few months. Public comments are due to TxDot by 8/29/05. This was only announced a few weeks ago so little time has been allowed for you to comment. Please see www.fulshear.com for maps, information, talking protest points, and links to TxDot for protest forms or on line comment form. The beautiful tree lined area Houston bikers love would be destroyed. Your comments do count, TxDot says recreational usage will help decide on Fulshear or Sealy. Protest section 408, Fulshear route in the next 7days!

Thank you,
drs

Sun and Ski sports in Katy Mills usually have drop in rides every sunday in the katy and west areas. Ask at your local bike store - they probably have drop in rides too.

I wish this heat/humdidity would go away so I could start riding again!
