While I have fiddled around with 700C and 26" bikes as a teenager, this is my first time owning a 20" multigear bike. I took delivery of a 2008 8FS (the Missus ended up getting a 2008 Mini).
BBT handle the box with usual care, that is to say that the rear reflector broke off and it looks like some chipping occured to the rear dropout powdercoat suggesting blunt trauma.
Well, I was quite surprised by how close the chain travelled to the tire and on closer inspection it looks like the rear derailleur cage is not hanging completely vertical (in plane with the dropout). Rather, it looks like it is bent inward and is maybe a pencil breadth or less from the rim. When looked at from the rear, it is actually inboard of the tire surface.
I'm not accustomed to a separate rear derailleur hanger as my previous bikes all had derailleur hangers as part of the dropout, but it seems like it is not completely parallel but leaning in to the wheel. Is this normal to get the steep chain angles needed for such a short chainstay? If it's normal I can live with it, but the chain is less than a centimeter from rubbing the right side of the rear tire!
Thanks all in advance for your reply!
PS. I would have posted this at Downtube.com but I just can't figure out how to do picture attachments there.
