I have a 20 year old hardtail MTB; heavy and unpleasent to ride. I'd like to get a road bike NOW (my first)! I have trainer and would be using it on the trainer til mid-April (too much snow!). Is it a bad idea to buy a new back without trying outside? Will the trainer give me good idea of what to expect on the road (comfort wise...320lbs!)?

I woldn't buy without at least a short test ride (mile or so minimum - longer is definately better). I don't think a trainer is going to give you a realistic feel for a new bike.

I would definately have to test ride a bike outside. Where do you live that there is always snow? I grew up in northeast Ohio and Lived in Wisconsin for a couple years. Even though it was usually cold in the winter, there were still good days to be outside.
