Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Ultegra Crack

I'm using an Utegra double crankset for my fixie. I want to remove for large chainring, but now the bolt used to hold the smaller chainring to the crank is too long. I was thinking about using some washers to take up the slack of the missing big chainring, but wasn't sure if this was an good idea? Does anybody know where I can get a short nut and bolt? Or is it safe to just use washers in place of where the big ring used to be?

I got some BMX chainring bolts for around $5 at the bike shop.

5 bucks is about right, I think that I paid $8.00 for mine. I thought about the washers also, but its not really worth all the time to go to the hardware store and get the thickness right. Besides it will end up costing you about half the cost of just doing it right and getting new bolts.

I left the old big chain ring in place, broke off the teeth, then ran a file over it to smooth. Now it's like a chain guard.

Make sure you get stainless bolts though, you don't want 'em rusting on you.

I want to do the same thing on a fixie I am planning. How did you break off the teeth? I have a dremel, but no other power tools available.

I just grabbed each tooth one at a time with a crescent wrench and bent. Fifty two bends later they were all gone. It was amazing how easily they came off. Then I smoothed what was left with a file. I think it looks pretty good.

(Actually, I left the two behind the crank arm, for some reason I thought that made it all extra cool.)
