I'm trying to write this essay, but I'm not 100% sure about the meaning of the question. This is for a literature class.

" In many of the texts we have read, characters negotiate categories of identity and construct their own identities through performance. Choose a character that uses performance to negotiate various categories of identification"

I'm not entirely sure what the professor means by "performance." Is "performance" simply referring to how the character(s) act? That is, the things they do which others can see (not what the person is thinking to themselves).

This isn't in reference to any particular character or text; she's asking about all of the things we have read? This consists mainly of some reasonably contemporary short stories.
