Wife and I bicycled 55 miles from our home up to San Jose, CA (longest ride to date). Not a great average pace, but for 60+ year-olds who have only been bicycling for 4 months It went well especially considering the slight headwind. This is not a scenic ride and includes shoulder of rural and not-so-rural fast moving county roads, but my Wife's requirement for lunch and coffe stops was satisfied. I'd left my car up in San Jose so we had a good meal, movie and a night away from home, chores and horses. We'll do a century in the Spring as soon as our rear ends are a bit tougher. Oh, and I had my first flat after 1100 miles .

Really appreciate the shared experiences and good humor on this forum.

That much of a stamina gain in just 4 months is fantastic! Congratulations to you both. :)

Nice job. You'll get that century in the spring. It's not really painful on the butt, more of a mental challenge. Take the whole day and enjoy the ride. Make stops, take pictures, have fun and you'll see it wasn't too difficult.

Congratulations! A ride of any distance in good company is pleasant. And that's a great distance for four months of riding.

Great work! Trust me this is just the beginning. It is amazing how once you have completed some mileage who your perception of distance changes. I'll bet if someone asked you 6 months ago if you could ride 55 miles you would have given them a funny look. Now you've done it. Keep up the great work and most importantly ENJOY the ride.

Happy riding,
André

Just to confess a bit - although my Wife and I haven't ridden for 24 years we did a few centuries and a 400 mile bike ride with our kids (then 10 or 11) back then. I was running marathons back then so I've got real life experience with pain tolerance although generally not of the buttocks variety. It's been a 20+ year decline in fitness and increase in weight both of which I'm trying to reverse.

60 y/o's don't need to be fast.
Stand up to pedal when your butt tells you too.
Very Nice Date.
