Probably not for everyone, but we turned my wife's Element into a bike hauler with just a board and a fork mount.
We sure don't miss the wind whistling through the tandem when it's on the Passat's roof.
(92" from fork tip to rear tire)

You are a genius. Why didn't I think of that. The Montana is about to get a fork mount bolted to the floor.

Very nice! We're thinking about getting a newer car soon (second hand to let someone else take the depreciation hit ;)), and the Element and Passat are both high on the list. I'm torn with the Element, though - fugly car, but amazingly practical especially for a cycling family as you've just proven again to me. I'd love to get an Element, but my wife has threatened divorce if we end up with one. :)

Well, you're right - it's definitely not the car to impress your friends with. It is a LOT more fun to drive than it's looks would suggest, though. My wife bought it for trips to the nursery, but it mostly gets used for bikes and dogs.
