My university has an online service that provides students with access to trivial things, such as their email (the ones the profressors use to contact you), your general course scheduale, your exam schedule, and your finance informations. You know, the real trivial stuff.

Well, this week is finals week. For one of my classes, we didn't know where our final was to be held until last Friday (the 5th). The professor sent out an email late on Friday with the exam time and location. Well, the IT's had the brilliant idea of updating the online service the week before finals.

Long story short, I go to check my email on Friday. I can't get in. I try to check my email on Saturday. I can't get in. I give them a call to see when it's going to be up. They automated voice said by Sunday at 6:00pm at the latest. I try to check email at 7 on Sunday. I still can't get in. I call again and they said to try access the exam schedual via the online services. I can't, because the ****ing system has information for 2009 only. Before this brilliant update, I could see my exam schedual (excluding the above class because a location had not been decided). But after, there is no information regarding the 2008 school year.

So thanks to the IT-iots, I was an hour late for my exam today. The exam time was 2 hours. And I was not the only one who came flying into the room an hour late. The professor couldn't allow extra time because the room was being used right after us. I have no idea what he is going to do regarding the grade, but I hope he grades those finals very, very lienently.

Sorry to all the IT's on BF, but, gggggggggrrrrrrrrrr, these IT-iots at the university aren't the brightest bulbs on the string.

edit: And now they have the email back up and working.

That's what happens when you let your enterprise run by a student body. Change management? Rollback plan and time? Milestones? Proper communication channels? Stuff like that doesn't exist in such an environment.
I've used to work for a University Medical Center as a Unix Admin, what a mess.

university and college IT depts are usually full of slackers who don't know or
learn a damn thing...and a school really needs IT to run things like a profitable
corporation would run them. like 99.999 uptime and no outages except planned
maintenance.

not all schools, most schools. some have kickass IT but not the majority

Oh forget that.

I had a particularly pertinent Dilbert strip pulled up...but it doesn't want to post!

I could tell you stories about our IT guy at the tiny school I taught at. He once told a student that students weren't his priority. :wtf: he finally got escorted off campus and told not to return.

At what point did you call the professor and ask what time the final was?

As a University IT person I'm sorry you had to endure that. At the same time, I don't work central campus IT just IT for a couple of departments. I would not want the job of the central campus guys. We have pretty competent guys at our Data Center but not all of them are. At least we schedule our maintenance for after finals on a Sunday. :D Your situation is pretty unacceptable. I have the policy that Students are our first priority (actually for me, It's to support the people that support the students). Facutly and campus stuff is secondary to students. Not everyone shares this view :(

Student protest. Let the administration, the department head (for your final), the instructor, the IT head know how their lack of planning during finals weeks is appalling, especially since YOU are paying for an education.

HD you need to act on this quickly...Contact prof, dept head, registrar, student gov/council,
your fac. advisor, acadmic advising, etc. Perhaps a call of concern from a parent.

I'd also see if you can contact others from the class in this same predicament.

Good luck !!!

At what point did you call the professor and ask what time the final was?

I knew which building it was in, just not the room number, so I ended up searching every room on every floor of the building (fortunately, it was only 3 stories). 45 minutes later, I found the darn room.
