Hi Just a quick question, has anyone had their egg beaters fail?
Brand new, outta da box, de just broke, honesly ridden less than 50 feet.
The retaining screw that holds the body to the spindle was broken, Im assuming it was over tightend at the factory, as the lateral loads from a couple of quick peddles surely could not have broken it.( with my chicken legs!)
I dropped em off at the shop where I got them, and they said they'd be warrantied, this is good, Im just wondering if this had happend to anyone else?
Also, any of you wrenches have a preference as to what type of grease to fill my other pair with. ive got about 1000km on them and I am now thinking about preventative maintenance.

The EGG Baters use sealed bearings. You can get a rebuild kit from Crank Brothers direct online.

Hope your LBS gave you another pair in exchange since it really hasn't been ridden at all. Your LBS can deal with warranty issues..... I currently have 3 pairs of stainless Eggbeaters and they're great.

George, sadly, they didnt have any in stock, they sell more Shinburger's than eggbeaters, but they offered me a used pair of shimano's for the time being, I've got my first pair of egg beaters on my road bike, so im ok untill the trails dry up that is... C'mon Fed Ex!!
I've ridden on Stainless Egg Beaters for three years now. No problems, and I weigh near 180, ride some steep hills, even use them on a fixed gear. If they were going to fail, it would be on a fixie, I would think...

You can grease them. They even provide an attachment for doing so. I have benn using a pair for about nine months no problems mechanically. Knee pain, different story. I just took them off this week.

That's the main reason why I use SPD's... I played hockey for years, and my knees are pretty much destroyed. Before I even had clipless pedals, my knees would kill me. Now, with the SPD's, my knees feel great! I guess it's that lateral play they allow that makes things a little easier on your knees.

Eggbeaters have alot of float...they give alot of lateral movement for me, I don't like locked in cleats that have zero movement.
To the breakage issue, it happens with all pedals. There are stories of Spuds, Time, Speedplays and eggbeaters breaking.
My eggbeaters have had no problems and I really like them.

True, Eggbeaters do have a lot of float. The "problem" (for me) is that it is centering float. If your foot is not pointing exactly at 0 degrees, there is tension that is trying to force your foot that way. I just switched to FROGs which have non-centering float. If your foot is at say 5 degrees, there is no tension trying to force your foot straight.
I really liked the way the Eggbeaters felt, but they were hurting my left knee. My feet point out, so I ride with my heels really close to the cranks and I could not set the cleats at enough of an angle to compensate for this. Not the norm.

Did you flip your cleats around, for more float?

I had a pair of Shimano SPD's they were 535's or was that 515's? any way, they didnt have much float, and I dont think they had any lateral play, may be due to being the lowest model? the eggbeaters have loads of float, no tension to get messed up with mud, (because of that I broke my wrist) and you cannot pull up and out of them unless your cleats are worn. but then again, thats my broken wrist talking the spd trash, so your milage may vary.

Avalanche325........ How do you like your new Frogs? I'm assuming you got those instead of the Speedplays because you already had a pair of nice Mtb shoes. I still have my first generation Frogs which I purchased back in 93. The cleats on them have improved over the years though. I wonder if the newer cleats work with older Frogs. So did you feel like you were walking on ice?

The Egg beaters were replaced with a brand spankin new pair,
