For emergency reasons or for fostering?

Care to share your story?

A member over on another forum just took in his friend's 10 yr old as a foster child after the couple had an accident and evidently no immediate family. I give him great kudos for doing that!

Does taking in your sister in law and her son for several years, off and on, as she gets her footing back count?
That boy is the son I don't have, he and my daughters are closer to siblings now than the cousins they are by blood.

While they have moved on to bigger adventures, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
My wife and her family introduced me to selflessness I didn't know previously.
For that, I'll forever be grateful.

yes

for my wife's half brother. We tried to help them keep their children, by taking them in. It was a very long and hurtful process. My wife still has yet to recover from it.

My ex's SIL had a wee little breakdown and we took in her 2 boys who are very close in age to my 2 stepsons... I am still very close to the oldest nephew (he stayed with us the longest) who is best friends with my step son and is looked upon by my girls as another brother. He now lives with his cousin and best friend who is a year younger then him.

The younger nephew now lives a good distance away (with his father) and we also are very close... he's a great kid.

When my oldest daughter was born our neighbour's daughter was 8 and she immediately became a permanent fixture at our home and moved in with us when she was 16 due to problems at home.

She has been like an older sister to both my daughters and I am very proud of what she has accomplished for herself through hard work and determination. I don't believe that she would have been able to do what she did had she stayed in what was a very non nurturing environment.

For someone with average academic and physical skills she managed to earn scholarships in both areas because she just doesn't quit and has some incredible drive.

Both my parents and I have let people live with us many different times.

My parents have had 22 foster kids over 7 years and currently has adopted 2 little monsters who think that it perfectly alright to thunder up and down the steps on the weekends (when I can sleep in), but but whine about how much noise we three college kids (my older brother, sister, and me) make when we put the garage up.. Oh well. I guess I would be more concerned if they didn't ***** about being woken up.

Non-Serious Response: Ask Michael Jackson

Serious Response: My fiancees parents have been acting as guardian to her second cousin, whose father is a drug-addicted indigent loser. Florida courts say he can get her back at Christmas, but frankly I'm hoping not. Fairly sure he is homeless and jobless with multiple bad checks still outstanding, so Im hoping he gets busted for those in the next 2 weeks.

Definitely convinced me not to have kids.

I once took in about twenty kids ages 8 - 12 and put them to work in a sneaker factory I was running aout of my basement. The state came in and closed me down.
You try to do good and the state has to ruin it.

I don't have the mental strength to take on 22 kids over 7 years. I know my limits.

We had foster children for about 10 months. First lad we had was only five, but had some serious issues that made it impossible for us to provide the care he needed. Maybe if he had been a year older and eligible for all day schooling it would have turned out differently. We then got a brother and sister who went back with their mother after about 6 months with us.

We realized our limitations then, and left this for others who were more prepared to deal with it.

Yes, redirekib...my avatar has a lot to do with it.

There are a lot of great stories here!! It's wonderful to see how Foosters were able to give to the children who are innocent and have no real control of their own situation.

I know that it can be a heartbreak when they leave or if they have to go back to a situation that we don't think is best...but the thing is knowing that you are giving all that you can. And that you are a positive part of that child's life. Perhaps one the gave them hope...

((hugs)) to all of you. And all of you "siblings" that have shared your love (and patience) with them too. :)

Permanently or for a set period of time?

Yes.

My grandmother had literally dozens of foster kids come to her funeral to pay respects to their "nanny". I was wondering , "who are all of these grown people that are not blood relatives"? She also took in wild animals until they healed. She was adopted herself, as an unwanted child of a biracial couple. She was pure love and magic. I miss her.

My mother took in all of my unproductive cousins, as we had a tight strict consrvative religious household. No cussing, etc..

I saw a peer and his girlfriend literally trip over the cradle of their newborn trying to get high in thier bedroom while I came to check on the baby. I threatened to take the baby right then and there. The mother got sober, left the prick, and I became her godfather.

I also worked as a teacher for five years in the projects, barrios, and trailer parks. I would pick them up after school and take them to the Boys & Girls Club to teach them art and keep them sane, feed them, sometimes let them use the pool shower, give them clothes, and drive them home. When the youngest one graduated I resigned. It was hard work. I just saw one of them (A grown man!) when I went to vote on Nov. 4. He was doing well, job, apt., etc. Good times.

I often bump into my grown "kids". I just looked at a bracelet one of the girls made me before I saw this thread. I had about 270 kids in total over a period of five years.

I moved into my old childhood bedroom at the folks' after Katrina and gave my house over to the Red Cross for a while.

I like sharp objects and expensive toys too much for my home to be safe for young children.

We used to foster newborn babies waiting for adopton. The longest was 9 months, and she hurt more than all the rest put together, when she left. The oldest we had was 6 years old.

We've had dozens, and credit them with teaching my sons how to be parents..........

A great opportunity that should never be passed up, if offered.

We loved every one -------------- and think of them all, often......

Child alone no. A young mother with her child for a few weeks, yes. This was back when my wife and me had no kids and it made me realize that I wanted kids more than anything.

I thought you were getting an HD TV? Make up your mind, kid or TV.

TV is for the kid. But right now that's gonna have to be on hold. My fridge broke last night. Had to spend money on that first. :o

But I DO appreciate your input in that thread, Austro. :)

Forgot to post that one of my long time friends (who I only see anymore when we run into each other at Wilson Farms) is single and she took in a foster child - he's been with her a few years now, he came to her when he was 10 - a problem child who was passed from one home to another as they couldn't handle him. She's a big hearted person and she has been working with him, plus he enrolled in some different therapy groups as well. And she's determined to help him.

Lady Sui,you do realize that for any kid over the age of being able to reach that that fresh un-opened quart of delicious PISTACHIO ice cream in your new fridge's freezer compartment is considered fair game for a light snack. :D Something to think about!
