I'm reading a book, A Feather on the Breath of God, and there's a mention of this. An Asian man claims that drinking a cup of boiling water will cure the flu. Is/was this ever believed to be true in Asia?

I think I'll take my chances with the flu. :wtf:

My Mom has a couple of elderly friends who every night with supper sip their scalding hot water like it was tea. I asked about it and they've done it all their lives - brought up doing this as it was to keep you healthy.

lol, I never said it's a good idea and that I agree with it. I just need to know whether it's an Asian tradition or not so that I may use it properly as evidence in my final paper.

boiling water is 212 degrees F. If you stick your hand in a pot of boiling water, you will be burned. What makes you think the soft, sensitive parts of your body will fare better?

Usnodaka (oo sno' da kah) therapy is the regular habit of drinking boiled water. By boiling the drinking water for five minutes the intelligence of the element of fire is incorporated, which magnifies the properties of the water. Sipping boiled water cleans the fine inner channels of the body and burns ama. This therapy also enhances the power of agni, the fire of digestion. The stronger the digestive fire, the stronger the mental and physical stamina, the stronger the immune system, the stronger the health and the brighter the glow of the skin. Ayurveda recommends pure drinking water with a moderate mineral content. Drinking six to eight large cups of boiled water per day is a profound therapy for hydrating the skin and body and keeping toxins under control. The water can be sipped during and after meals, but not on an empty stomach. Boiled water can be used throughout the day but should not be saved overnight, since its therapeutic properties expire. Ayurveda prescribes three different temperatures for drinking boiled water, depending on the body type. Estheticians can be trained to diagnose their clients’ body types and recommend the appropriate regimen.

* Kapha type people, whose predominant elements are water and earth, generally have larger body mass; a slow, graceful manner; and an easy disposition. Kapha types can sip the water hot. This reduces the toxic buildup to which kapha type skin is prone. Pitta types are dominated by the element of fire. They have medium frames with fair, sensitive skin, sharp hunger, keen intellect, and are sensitive to heat and sun.
* Pitta types should cool the boiled water to body temperature and drink with or after meals. Pitta types must be careful to avoid hot temperatures. Vata types are predominated by the element of wind and space. They are quick, slight of build and easily tired.
* Vata types can drink the water warm, avoiding hot and cold. Their cool, dry skin needs warm-temperature water for hydration and to clear the channels and burn ama.

I used to work at a restaurant where one of our regular customers was a very sweet elderly lady who always got a bowl of lobster bisque and wanted it microwaved to a boil and brought to her immediately. Se would send it back if it wasn't scalding hot and occasionally would have u reheat it halfway through her meal. Perhaps this is why.

I don't know if boiling water alone is less bad for you than boiling water w/ tea in it.

Haha. I don't use Wikipedia as a source, ever; my professor(s) would reject that in an instant. It's external links section is quite handy, however. If I see a fact on wikipedia, I'll go to it's original source.

That depends on pressure. Water boils at 40F at .122psi.

Yeah, I was trying to keep it simple. I live at 5000 ft and have boiled water at 11,000. I'm quite aware of pressure relating to temp.

Why people do things - such as this - is strange to me. But maybe I can shed some light on it with a song ...

OK, I can't sing. But here's a tail:

And another tale:

My wife would always cut an inch off each side of her ham before cooking it. I asked her why and she said that's how her mother did it. I went to her mother and asked why she always did it. She said that's how her mother did it. I went to my wife's grandmother and asked her why she cut 2 inches off her ham before baking it. She said because it wouldn't fit in her pan unless she did.

I just eat tons of garlic if I need to fight a virus. It is a very potent anti-viral. Especially uncooked.

Would someone mind pointing out (intelligent) Fire, Earth, Wind, Water and Space on my periodic table?

I think in this case "boiling water" means hot, tea-temperature water, not actually boiling. Not sure about drinking it for the 'flu, but people in China drink hot water by itself quite regularly. I've been told that drinking cold water (especially when you're hot) is bad for digestion. Then again, almost anything that diverges from narrowly defined "traditional" Chinese food and beverage consumption is considered bad for digestion.

I've had a bad cold recently and have been drinking hot water. I like it.

Reminds me of the story about red barns.

A number of farmers were queried regarding why most barns were red. The answer was that red was the cheapest color of paint sold in the Sears catalog. When Sears was asked why red was the cheapest color, they answered, "Because the farmers buy the most of that color paint".
