Fifty Plus (50+) - Reding Bicycling -- so you don't have to

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I got my Jan 2009 Bicycling today.
But I haven't read it. It says it's the "Get-Lean Issue".
That makes me nervous. I feel guilty enough as it is. I haven't exercised since the day after Thanksgiving. I feel sluggish and fat. And now they're going to tell me if I just lay off the Ho-Ho's and ride 25 miles a day I'll get buff.
I can't take it. Not at this time of year.
Someone else read the damn thing and tell me what's in there.

The title, of course, should be 'reeding', not 'reding'.

I think that the results of another poll should be applied to this one:

I've been too busy ridding my bike to reed the magazine!
If you put a reed on your bicycle will it sound like an instrument playing beautiful music. I ride for exercize but I am not worried about my weight, so reading a magazine will not change my riding habits.

I like the idea about the "Other" poll----Or was that about random posting

I read BuyCycling until a few years ago when I got tired of reading the same thing every month. Last time I checked they were still printing the same issue.

Why are you putting sticks in the magazine?

I was one of the folks who used to poke fun at Bicycling Magazine (same old stuff every month, too much hyping of the latest and greatest). I was just going to say that I thought the latest issue was a notch above what it used to be. Though the cover story "Get Lean" is the same old stuff, I actually thought there were a number of interesting things inside that were better than in the recent past (as opposed to last Spring, when I thought almost every article for every issue was terrible and/or obvious, for several months in a row).
I noticed a month or two that they have a new editor - maybe she is a bit more focused on improving the quality of the magazine.

I voted "Other" because I don't reed very well and didn't know what the other options meant.

I picked up November 2008 for kicks. It had "Get Fast Now" and "Your Stay Lean Eating Plan". I think TWL may need all three articles laid out for him by a qualified third party to get him over being fat and sluggish.:D

I'm too busy reeding this magazine to bother with Bicycling
Reeding music such as the clarinet... Wait, this is about bicycles? Never mind.

Oh come on! Reading, reading, reading. I hope I am over reacting and you were kidding.
I fully intend to read the article about delivering Meals on Wheels by bicycle, in the newest issue, before the week is over. (Ashamed to say that my stoker/wife and I deliver Meals on Wheels by car)

Major props to you for delivering meals on wheels. I am really impressed with the high quality network of volunteers who make sure that hot, nutritious meals delivered 365 days a year.
I skimmed thru it. I have one article bookmarked to read later. It's entitled, "Getting Bigger All The Time". No, it's not about the waistline or "down there" getting bigger.
Now I gotta load the new CX bike on the car and go ride.

Won't bother w/ the poll, but I did 'read' the Jan. issue the other day at Chapters (our Barnes & Noble etc. clone), and fwiw: obligatory 'human interest' item #1 -- a visually-impaired wrench; obligatory 'human interest' item #2: you can lose a lot of weight if you ride a lot and eat well; if you have a lot of money you can a) find out it's really hard to do a Tour de France climb, but b) the descent is really fun and c) you can go to a really nice restaurant when you're done; if you have a lot of money, and no shame, you can buy and 'ride' a really expensive road bike, just like the pros. That's about it, I think; there's a few other recycled bits, but nothing that you wouldn't have (more or less) read before.:)

Oh no, Noooo! Maybe I'm conflating two or three issues -- it's really very hard to tell with 'Bicycling' magazine:roflmao:

I switched over to Road Bike Action, but then I gave up on getting lean, riding faster and Style Man a couple of decades ago. I can't see Bicycling appealing to most 50+ers, but then if you are really old & forget most things from month to month every new issue is a fresh insight on how to ride faster, get fit and be stylish - just like the hot 20 somethings in most of the pics.
But honestly, I frequently read a copy in the Library and I think more recent issues have been better than about a year and more ago.

When you were a kid and played Monopoly, did you pronounce the "Reading" in Reading Railroad as "reeding" or "redding?" The city is pronounced "redding," right?

Having grown up in PA, I can attest you are correct. Before company would come to the house we would also "red up the room".

We lived in Reading, PA for 5 years. Redding is the correct pronunciation. We also learned some Pennsylvania Dutch phrases.

Reading, Pa., was named after Reading, England, home of Ricky Gervais.
The British version is pronounced "Redding."
I used to work near Reading for a couple of years.

You learn something new every day.
It's early in the morning
About a quarter till three
I'm sittin' here talkin' with my baby
Over cigarettes and coffee, now
And to tell you that
Darling I've been so satisfied
Honey since I met you
Baby since I met you, ooh -

Yet another reason for not liking Reading. My company's head office is at Reading and the MD is similar to Ricky in the "The Office"

Is it not also the site of a famous prison in which Oscar Wilde was jailed and to which they send Bike Forum members who cannot spell?

Well, having just gotten back into cycling this year, I read (redd, reed, raed) Bicycling, and I'm not ashamed of it. Maybe that will change, maybe even soon, but I manage to find an interesting tidbit or two each month. Are there much better cycling magazines out there that I need to check out?

Absolutely!
Bicycle Quarterly.
www.vintagebicyclepress.com.
I *highly* recommend going to their website, finding a couple of back issues that look interesting, and ordering them.
I just got the latest issue - it has an absolutely stunning, 10 or 15 article on the history of brakes.
