Hi all,

Am new to this site. In the last month my girlfriend and I have decided that we are going to pack our jobs in and cycle south hopefully all the way to the bottom. Would probably class us as semi experienced as we both have some experince of long distance cycling (have ridden from Toronto to Vancouver). We re both of an above average fitness.

We are hoping to be setting off around mid may 2009 from Powell River (on BCs coast a couple of hundred miles north of vancouver). The route as it stands would be through vancouver island, and then straight down the west coast of the states, through central america to panama city, then flying (due to a gap in the network) to maybe lima Peru and continuing south.

This is just first ideas really, let me know what you think in terms of gear etc.

As it stands i am in need of a new bike, so any recommendations would be useful

Thanks

Welcome! That sounds wonderful.

I think your post would gather more relevant responses in the Touring Forum, which is more about multi-day to multi-year traveling by bike, whereas this forum is more about riding long distances in a single push (a day to a week long) without much in the way of sleeping and relaxing and exploring.

There are a lot of "which bike" threads on the touring forum.

You might have seen www.crazyguyonabike.com - people post their online touring journals, many of which have gear lists.

Good luck with your planning and your trip!

Check out Jeff Kruys' journal at Crazy Guy On a Bike. His trip is pretty much identical to what you're planning. He just made it to Ushuaia last week after a trip of about two and a half years duration from BC.
