hey so my brother lives up in boston and commutes to school on the ss we got him, so of course now its gettin all icy ect so we are lookin into studded tires. Problem is the bike has road brakes so there is very little clearance (i think they are short reach calipers), i think it has 28mm tires on it right now but basically i'm lookin for a 700x25 studded tire or even a cheap 700x25 knobby with lower profile knobs or knobs that will fit inside road brakes. Knobs will at least help a tad in the snow and I may just DIY some studs onto one but i have to find a tire to do that to first. I would prefer not to DIY cause i don't wanna spend the time but w/e

thx

If it's got 28's on there now, could the bike take 30's?

Nokian makes a studded tire called the A10 that they list as 700X32 but it's actually closer to 30mm. They fit on my 80's road bike just fine.

On my 2005 Allez road bike the problem isn't so much the brake as the fork.

it will take 30s i just don't think it will take a knobby 30mm with studs, the brake and fork have basically the same limitations its a steel fork, but i know what you mean there, my racing bike can't handle anything bigger than 25s, maybe 28 in the front but a 28 hits the frame in the rear (not that i run anything other then 23s on that bike) if you have an 80s bike with 700c wheels not 27s you would have to have long reach calipers, and bikes back then where made with more clearance anyway. But thanks

Visit http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp. Peter has photos with the tires mounted and a ruler. You can then determine if the tire will fit your bike.
