Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After searching for a while my LBS has the following choices for me (I am 6ft and weigh 230lbs):

2008 Specialized FSRxc Comp for $1200
OR
2007 Gary Fisher Caliber 29 for $1300

Any input?

Thanks.

Have you even ridden either of them? That should always be your first course of action when choosing a bike.

2008 will go down as the "year of the housing market crash". Do you really want a bike associated with a crash? Go with the 2007, or wait and see what 2009 brings.

Yes, I have ridden both bikes and liked them both equally. I prefer the look of the Specialized (and the prize) but I just want to make sure I am not buying a total "dud" bike. Makes sense?

Ha! Extremist04...you are funny. Sorry for the typo...the "price" is better on the Specialized ($100 less). Any input, Extremist04?

Honestly, i'm a big fisher fan, and i'd lean towards that one. however, a 29er and a 26er will be completely different, and which one is better depends on your riding style and local trails. personally, i have a FS 26er and i love it.
