I must say, I never had much of an appreciation for hip-hop because of how it's marketed in the US. But my friend sent me a tip to Mike Skinner's work -- it's really excellent. I especially enjoy his rather ironic use of flat-tonality verses ("the money is no more for sure" in It Was Supposed to be So Easy) and his melodies that are choppy tonal-step wise but flow and sound great.
