This is my first winter that i will be attempting to ride through piles of snow, and I was wondering if anyone has any good tips for me. We just got about 15-20 cm of snow this week, and everything is icy here in calgary AB. what should I be looking out for?

I'm moving this to Winter Cycling (from Commuting). See other threads in here for all the info you'll ever need. For a quick summary:

- wear warm clothes
- buy studded tyres
- use good lights

Oh, and send some of that snow our way. We had a proper snowfall, but it's all melt by now, with even warmer forecast towards the end of the week.

I'm in Omaha, NE - temps were 25F with wind chill down to 5F I guess. I wear thermal wicking long johns with regular biking shorts over them, followed by ski pants that I got from Target. I wear a long sleeve jersey, plain sweat jacket over that and then a C9 target jacket. Normal winter gloves. I have a nice Balclava from Sheels with a hat, helmet. I wear the PerformanceBike.com clear lens glasses (3 kinds interchangable). I have one pair of wool socks on with the SPD bike shoes. My feet were cold this morning and fingers a bit. I have not experienced snow/ice yet, but have studded tires, so I'm ready for that.

Just take what you have and make sure at least the base layer is wicking - just build from there. It's a trial and error for everyone - once you have something figured out, then you can purchase more expensive biking clothes...Me - I'm going to be a Fred and just use what I have.
