Background, bike in question is a 2002 RM Trailhead, stock drivetrain is Alivio shifters, Deore rear mech, SRAM 5.0 cogs, SRAM PC48 chain, Alivio front mech & Alivio crank. Over the winter I had it upgraded to a RF Next crank, LX front mech & had a new SRAM PC69 chain installed to work with the 9speed chain rings. As my 5.0 cogs were quite worn, the shop put on a new 8-speed cog set, looks like a cheap Shimano set to my eyes.

On to the problems:
1) poor shifting compared to stock set up
2) rear mech will not shift out of the largest cog, just gets stuck there, it's free of crud and freshly lubbed up.
3) rear mech will not go into smallest cog without a fight
4) up shifts (into smaller cogs) are slow and very clunky

Do you think these problems could be caused by the cheap cog set? Should I just throw another 5.0 on there and see if it clears up (I thought the 5.0 performed GREAT!)?

Any help is much appreciated!

I would put an 8 speed chain on, not a nine. It may be too narrow to fit properly on the thicker 8 speed cogs. An 8 speed chain will work fine on 9 speed rings.

Chain is my vote, and not to hard to check.
Still have the old one?, I like to get my parts backfrom the shop.

hummmm, shop said you needed 9 speed chain on 9 speed rings. Makes sense that the narrow chain would screw up the rear though. Damn, maybe I should just go 9 speed.?.

You now have a narrow chain on Fat cogs. Go with an 8sp chain.
