I toured the Apfelkorn factory when I was in Deutscland some years back. Lots of samples...LOTS of samples. Fun times.

Ja, Ich kann deutsch. Aber nicht so gut. Mein familie kommt aus deutchland. Es ist ungefahr zehn jahre seit Ich in deutschland war. Mein deutsch ist ganz besser wann Ich viel bier getrunken haben. ;)

It is essentially apple sauce, sweetened and spiced (with apple pie spices usually) and cooked down to a thick, non-watery, spreadable puree. During cooking it turns brown and if done properly should not taste burnt at all, although sometimes a little caramel-y flavor is nice. You can do the same with many other fruits, pears, quinces and bananas to name three.

Good apple butter is good stuff.
