Actually, you do. Having the cake requires having the benefits of the cake -- otherwise it is worthless. The main benefit of a cake, as I see it, is a short term satisfaction of hunger, something you can only get from eating it.
Maybe it should be " you can't eat your cake & have it too" that would be a more logical selection of words. On the other hand if you don't eat the cake because you hate the F/ing stuff you could use it for barter & maybe swap it for a cold sausage with a workmate at smoko

But again, to have the cake's benefits you basically have to eat it. Well, I suppose you could use it as currency in a barter exchange, but does anyone really acquire a cake for that purpose? More to the point, if that were more common would we not have people saying "you can't have your cake and swap it, too"?

" you can't eat your cake & swap it too" might be better . but of course while all this debate is going on someone might steal the cake ! (you can steal the cake & eat it too !!) but then that makes a lie out of the saying "that realy takes the biscuit" when all the time it was meant to be "that realy takes the cake"
PS. I think its about time I went back to work ! "the devil finds work for idle hands" ect

New addition: any phrase that states the obvious. Example; Trying to open the ID card operated door downstairs, but its broken, girl at the front desk comes and opens it, and promptly says, "The door must be broken!" NO ****!!!
What is the going exchange rate for cake anyway?
