I stumbled onto a vintage italian basso on CL this past saturday. When I called, the guy on the other end told me he knew nothing about bikes but was selling for his uncle. He didn't know what size it was but his uncle was 5"8ish, which is my height. Four people had called before me but first come first served. The location was about 40 mins away and I was unsure whether or not to pursue since the purchase or fit wasn't guaranteed.

Feeling adventurous, I made the the drive out to the distant suburb. Arriving at his storage unit, I luckily was the first to show up. I waited in anticipation as he opened the gate. As the bike appeared through the dark garage, I could not believe my eyes. There sitting covered in dust was a pristine Basso with gorgeous chrome lugs from the 80's. Upon further inspection, I realized it was outfitted with a full Campy super record groupset, a NOS Turbo saddle and a Silca framepump. I quickly grabbed my $350 cash and handed to the seller and drove home with a big smile on my face.

I put some air in the tubulars and some lube on the chain and the Basso rides like a dream. So the question I have is, how much do you think this is worth?

Nice score, I think you did good. We had a Basso Lotto pop up on our local CL for 100.00, the seller got tons of responses and figured out it was worth money, she pulled the ad and put it on ebay...:notamused:. Take a ton of pictures and show off your new ride.

I have a feeling your going to get moved to the valuation sub-forum.

Well, to you, the seller, and his uncle, it was worth $350.00 cash;

how much more were YOU willing to pay?

Why not put it on eBay at cost and find out how much they'll bid it up?

Nice looking bike. Good find.
From what I have seen it might bring $500 to $600 in southern California if you wait for the right buyer to find it.
I think it would be gone very quickly at $350 just as you found out.

That's great that you didn't have a wild goose chase. Like a lot of readers I have responded to the CL ad when the guy says I don't know much about bikes but he has had a lot of calls. I go for a look and it's 1 big piece of rust. Now I won't bother unless the seller can talk about the bike like he knows it and has ridden it. Bike speak is a must unless it's just down the street.

With Campy SR, and the frame looks like NOS, it's well worth over $1500. Camp out and buy it.
