Mountain Biking - How much should a 2002 Trek 8000 be worth?

Probably less than $500.00....parted out, a bit more. Given to a friend that might want to get into this sport...priceless

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds reasonable. I was trying to decide whether to keep it and maybe upgrade a couple of things or sell. If I sell...wanted to ask a fair price.

500 seems like A LOT of loot for that bike. I think 200-300 for someone who wants to avoid wally-world type bikes and will use it for more than a ride to from the grocery store/bar. If you've got a friend who is interested in breaking into the sport, bro em out!

Do mountain bikes lose their value that much? The previous owner claims to have had his butt on it 5-6 times...It looks like maybe that's true. I'm just asking. I really don't know what they are worth.

I have heard that first year depriciation on one is about 50%...don't know if that is true but it sounds about right

Bikes depreciate quickly...mainly b/c technology has been improving so much in such a short time. Nobody seems to want older models b/c of all the "hype".

I bought a 2004 8000 from the LBS last June for $600. It ollked like it had never been used.

I know that if you wait until after Christmas you can generally get a $1000.00 bike for $500.00-$600.00 especially if you check out the internet retailers

sounds about right. And if you look on craigslist, sometimes, they can be had much cheaper when people that thought they wanted to mtb, clean out their garage because they just couldn't give up the sedentary lifestyle
