Scenario:
two middle sized american cities.
one city has a complete lack of cycling-specific infrastructure and 200 significant signalized intersections.
the other city has a smattering of bicycling specific infrastructure on a small percent of streets, less than 5 percent of their roads, on some of the major arterials. they have 200 significant signalized intersections. at 150 of their 200 significant signalized intersections, the city has placed bike boxes of the type that position thru bicyclists to the left of all right turning traffic.
Which streetscape would encourage greater 'vehicular', destination specific road positioning from cyclists?
Could bike specific infrastructure at some intersections in a community encourage greater vehicular operation by bicyclists at the remaining intersections ?
I postulate that bike infrastructure on a minority of streets in a community can do just that: encourage greater vehicular riding and destination positioning by larger percents of bicyclists.
