Ok everyone, I have a few questions all related to cassettes. First of all what is the main type of terrain that you ride your cross bike on? Second, do you run a road or mountain cassette? Third what is the gearing of your cassette? Thanks.

I ride mostly rolling hills on my normal rides. On my commute, I have a good hill to climb up though. I run a 11-32 LX cassette with an XT derailer on my cross/commute bike. I'm stronger now and can probably go with a narrower 12-25 cassette but it's nice to have the "insurance" gears.

I have a 12-32 cassette with an xt rear and a single 42 chainring. I race this set up on typical cross terraine, mud, grass, packed dirt, snow ect... Sometimes I find the 32 to be a bit too big when trying to climb a hill that really should be a run up and the rear tire just spinns out. a smaller cog may give more traction?

most of the races here [quebec and eastern ontario] are on rolling, grassy and boggy terrain with a fair bit of singletrack but few really big climbs. i have a 13-26 road cassette with 38/48 chainrings and a 172.5 crank [i have 170 on my road bike]. i find that this is more than sufficient. if i need a lower gear to get up a hill, then i'm probably better off running it.

I have an Ultegra setup on my Poprad - crank is standard 53/39 and the rear is a 12/27. I ride 100% road at the moment but have a Coda 38/29 crank in reserve for serious offroad CX.
