Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - well....I posted because it's Friday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So this is my first post in this section. And although I have read this forum for the last couple of months and must say it brings many smiles and a couple of lol from time to time.
However....since I am going to turn 48 here shortly, I am too old to post here. Because I have some road bikes, mtb and a tandem, I can't post here, and most importantly, since I only have a couple of generic single speeds (Langsters no less, the taxi and tokyo), I can't fit into black straight leg pants, and I barely have enough hair to cover my head, let alone grow it down over one eye, don't drink PBR, and still have brakes on my bikes, I know I can't post here...BUT...
I just thought I would wish everyone a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and all that jazz and thank you for making me laugh.
Signed,
too old to be a poser or a hipster :50:

Langsters generic... whuh?
No age limit here. As long as you at least pretend you ride without brakes you'll be fine.

doesnt sound like yr too old to be a jerk though.
im 34, have no cool haircut. i have many bikes, my favs just happen to be track bikes.. i cant fit into skinny jeans (big thighs from riding fixed gear ON THE TRACK), i prefer track pants (like adidas windbreaker pants..).
you are a hipster because you are calling one type of person uncool, while you see yourself as better as a direct result of what you own, and what you wear and look like.
at yr age i'd think you'd be above all this.
eid mubarak, happy hannukha, and happy holidays... cuz we aint all christians here.

Well VDB, I knew I had a 50-50 chance of getting under someone's fingernail for my post. But I'll be happy with 20% from the current replies.
You know, as I have rekindled my passion for riding after many years of racing motorcycles (roadracing), and recently have been enjoying going back to my youth and just riding a single geared bike for the very natural joy of just riding, I started reading this section with much enjoyment from the passionate banter of what a TRUE single geared/fixed rider is supposed to be or not be. Thus my post.
It was supposed be light hearted, take a shot at myself before some of the other regulars do, and OH MY, judge me, but yet, still introduce myself. But basically, I am just happy to ride my bike when I can. My kids are almost all grown up and now it's time for my wife and I to rekindle many things you put aside when raising a family.
Oh and thank you for the cultural lesson on the holidays. If I just posted Happy Holidays, someone was going to respond about being all PC and just say Merry Christmas...so Merry whatever floats your boat.
To the others, thanks and a hearty LOL to Hobartlemagne. That was the reply I actually thought I would be getting. Frankenmike, no offense on the Langsters, I have 2 and am very satisfied with them :D.
VDB, no hard feelings you Adidas wearing big thighed track monster, much luv and well wishes to ya anyways, but I prefer Hawaiian shorts when I ride

Like my grandma always used to say "age is nothing but a number" in fact she used to ride this old bike she probably bought in the 50's, fixed gear, she didn't have brakes on it, and she rode it until she was 65.
Anyways I am 38 years old and brake-less for life just on a fixed gear, no need for brakes on a fixed. My road bikes and mtb's of course have a brake or two.
Cheers!!

brakes are never a bad idea on the street, It's nice to be able to stop faster than a car door can open :thumb:

I can't tell you how many times I know people and friends that got "doored" with brakes, alot. Just because you have a brake doesnt mean mishaps will happen. In fact I know more people that have been injured or have done something stupid with brakes, than without. The brake-less rider by far will be the safer rider. 1. They understand riding a bike and skill level is way above normal. 2. The brakeless rider is so much more aware of their surroundings, it's a skill that is not taught. and 3. Brakes weight about 10 pounds, who needs anchors and cables on a bike.

4. The brakeless rider will be the slower rider.
