Foo - Time for a new iPod. Which one?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Well...my 5th generation iPod died on me. It's just frozen, won't play jack. So I think it's time to get a new one. But which one? I'm thinking I want one with flash memory as I believe it to be more durable for running and cycling and general abuse. So that leaves me with the Shuffle, Nano, or Touch. I don't think I need a Touch...seems a bit large...it's a bit more expensive. The Nano and Shuffle looke appealing. Nano screen is nice...I might get annoyed by the Shuffle's lack of screen since I can't sort through songs and stuff. But I like how you can just clip the Shuffle right on to anything.
Any thoughts?

I have an iTouch and would never think about riding with it...
To big and cumbersome to use on a bike...
All I can add...
Isn't it dangerous to ride with music....
;)
Hopefully, that will end any arguments...

I love my Nano (1st Gen 8GB). There are plenty of rubber sleeve holders for the Nano that come with an elastic strap to wrap around an arm. I put mine on upside down so I can read the screen. I've worn mine through some rain, and it still works fine.
Get both.
I have two, a 2nd generation and a Shuffle.
Yes, it's cool to be able to pick and play but the Shuffle isn't that inconvenient -- just load it with your favorites and let it play randomly. When you get tired of those load it with different favorites.

Well it sounds like it's between the nano and shuffle then, right? I still use my 1st gen shuffle but sometimes get annoyed by it not having even the smallest screen. Battery on it lasts forever, though.

+1. My shuffle is dedicated to workouts (running or cycling) and the nano for everything else.
Apple tends to change the shape of the nano every year. I think I have a 3rd or 4th gen and love it. The new one looks just like the 2nd or 3rd gen. Confusing huh?

To ride with you need a Shuffle. Something different off the bike. Shuffle's aren't that expensive.
I really liked the shuffle but I just use my iPhone now.

Get a 2nd generation Nano on eBay. I bought a barely used one recently for a christmas present (in pink, for someone else) and it was only $75 or something. It was 4GB. Not a bad deal.
I don't know why the prices on Nanos are so weird. The 2nd generation are about the same price as 4th generation. Sometimes the 3rd are even more expensive online.
The 4th generation are pretty nifty. They've got accelerometers in them so you can shake to shuffle, and flip it on its side to change the view orientation.
I have a soft spot in my heart for cool uses for accelerometers, being an electrical nerd.

The 4th Generation Nano is great; check out the hanging iSkin case. If you can, wait until (perhaps)April when Apple will most likely come out with another generation of iPods.
one possibility:

Do you need a lot of storage? If so, you might want to get a 6th gen iPod for now.
However, if storage isn't a concern, get the iPod touch. From what I hear, it's perfect. I haven't gotten it only because I can't align $200 for it right now and selling my old iPod won't net enough to make it affordable.

well, it's about 3 years old...and it's help up pretty well. i've dropped it off my bathroom counter onto the hard floor...dropped it off the kitchen counter onto the hard floor...dropped while fiddling with it during runs and bikes onto the pavement...sat on it, left it in the blistering heat on the seat of my car, left it in the artic chill during winters in the car... etc etc.
it's been a trooper! lasted longer than i expect considering i don't baby the thing like many people. if i can get another ipod to last 3 years after throwing it around like a piece of crap, i'll be happy again! :) not too many pieces of electronic equipment (except maybe my cell phone) can put up with my abuse.
Nano...I have two of them and they're great. I don't have the latest generation model, but I have one each of the two previous generations. Didn't pay a dime for either one....lucky me!

Focusing on using while riding --
The Shuffle can be fully operated without looking at it or unclipping it. If you have a way to manage the headphone cable, you can clip it to a rear strap of your helmet. Can't choose tracks by browsing, but they stay "in order" so you can skip ahead or go back to one that you want to hear again.
The iPod Touch -- I think -- can also be operated without having to fish it out and hold it, although for track advance, pause, and rewind you'd need headphones with a compatible click button (for example, the iPhone's earphones). Not 100% sure that works on early Touchs, though. Big capacity, though, and it has the ability to do a lot more, although there aren't any GPS functions.
The Nano should be able to be controlled via a cabled controller like the Touch and current-gen iPod Classic (I know that the Classic can be controlled by the iPhone earphones). It has speakable menus, and can be browsed, although you'd have to do that while stopped.
My vote for the bike: Shuffle. But only if you don't have an iPhone.

I have a 1GB 2nd gen Shuffle that I use in the gym and it's handy if you have a particular playlist.
Everywhere else I use my ipod Touch because I like watching video on the subway, play games, my calendar and contacts are on it, my favourite photos, oh and music.
I also have an 80 GB ipod that holds my collection and will be attached to a set of speakers this spring.
i like the later shuffle. i just recently realized you can operate it really well with it under your shirt. for instance, at my last mtb endurance race i clipped it to the straps of my bib and can use all the buttons through my shirt
:D

I'm kind of disgusted w/my iPod shuffle. My first one died and was still under warranty and Apple replaced it, that was nice. Now the second one has just died, just slightly out of warranty. For what you pay, a premium, that doesn't seem right. Next time, I will get a different brand, though I do like iTunes.

My experience is the opposite, and no, I don't work for Apple.
My shuffle is a couple years old and I never have had a problem. I even have a 1st generation iPod still working as well as the day I bought it. :)
