Trying to decide on what type of brakes to get. What are the pros and cons of each (Vee vs Disc)? How long have disc brakes been available. Is ABS next? Is it needed?

What kind of riding are you doing? What kind of environment, wet or dry? What kind of bike?

V brakes are pleanty strong for everything except extreme downhill riding. They are lightweight. Easy to maintain and adjust. Inexpensive. The bad points are: They are not as strong as discs, they wear your rims, they are not as good in wet muddy conditions.

Disc brakes are even stronger. They look cool (c'mon, that's what REALLY sells 90% of them), They don't overheat easily, they are great for wet and muddy conditions, woy can use lighter disc specific rims. Bad points: they are heavy, expensive, more maintenance, rotors can warp when overheated, pads have longer break-in time, special hubs required.

Is it needed? That will open a can of worms. I think it all depends on the type of riding. Disc brakes have been around for a while now. And don't forget there are mechanical and hydraulic.

don't forget: special braze-ons are also required for discs - it's not like you can slap them on just anything.

i use a hydraulic disc on the front and conventional (short-arm) cantis on the rear; the disc is worlds more powerful and consistent in the extremely mucky local conditions - but like Avalanche says, unless you're doing downhilling or riding in sludge (like me), v-brakes should be fine.
