Hi,

I just bought a rear wheel (a sun hill rod laced to a formula disc hub) and was wondering how to tell if it will accomodate a 9 speed cassette? The previous owner ran an 8 speed cassette on it. It came off a stock 2001 Norco 125. I don't have the wheel yet to inspect it but it should be here soon. Are all rear hubs usually 9 speed compatible after a certain production year? I'm kind of new to the mechanical aspects of biking so I apologise if the answer is obvious, thanks.

If he was running an 8 you can run a 9 with no problem as the 9 speed cassette is the same width as an 8 only the cogs and the spacing differ. Funny thing for the roadies is that the new Shimano Dura Ace 10 fits on a 8/9 hub as well.
