say if i was djing with a friend, and made a short 15 minute mix composed of 5 songs, and then posted this mix on the web for free download... is this legal? how about if they can only stream the mix?

is it only illegal if i charge for the mix, or if i make the tracks separately available (thus just posting individual track on the net)? all the songs are mixed into each other, so you really can't cut the tracks out and keep it.

so... is it legal?

No, it's not legal. It's copyright infringement. You're giving away intellectual property without a license to do so.

Technically, you need a license in order to DJ in public or private events as well.

yeah everything is copyrighted.

so then those DJs who do the parties are infringing on the laws as well? or the other "big" DJs that post hour long mixes on a monthly basis on their website for free are illegal too?

or do all these people have the licenses?

They may have a license from the recording company. If not, they are in violation. It would then be up the appropriate recording company to go after them.

I assume the copyright laws are the same in Canada as they are in the U.S.
