Mountain Biking - Shimano U Brake replacement

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have an old Stumpjumper with the original U brake still on it. I'm wanting to replace my entire braking system (since I also still have the original cantilever in the front and the motorcycle-style levers). I know a V-brake will work in the front but not quite sure what to put in the back (actually under the chainstays). I'm wondering if I can use a cantilever brake, or will it protrude in such a way that it contacts my crankarms? The bike is 17 years old but I just can't part with it, so I'm making a few upgrades.

Nope, cantis won't work. You're stuck with either a u-brake or a rollercam.

Here is what you do...Convert your old bike into a single speed to ride around town, then go out and buy a new bike and be happy!
