Hi Everybody,

I'm a big fat guy (and I'm ok with that phrase :) ) and I'm planning to get myself a Trek Valencia (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/urban/valencia/valencia/) just after Christmas. I'm not looking to do century rides or lose 200 pounds (although that would be nice). I just need to add some type of exercise to my computer geek (Macintosh Consultant) lifestyle.

I've been lurking on this forum for a couple of months now and I have to say that everyone seems genuinely nice and helpful to boot.

I'm looking at the Valencia because I had a Trek 700 a while back and really liked it. I could probably get by with a Walmart Special but I really love a well-built piece of machinery. Anyone have any experience with this model as a clyde?

Just wanted to introduce myself and say "Hi".

Tom

Thanks Mr. Beanz, I've been reading a lot of your posts and threads since they cover this area of OC quite often.

I'm planning to buy it at Jax in downtown HB. My past usual rides have been on the beach path mostly. I lived off Newland street for many years and we would do a Newport Pier run all the time. Had to hit Mutt's, Blackies and the Beach Ball. . . :D

Holy Moly but that is a slick ride. Man, I gotta get out of the roadie aisles more often.

I'm with Beanz, if you don't end up hangin' a hundred on that baby I'll buy you a blinkie.

Welcome to the herd, and enjoy your year round riding weather. It's the one thing I miss about living in LoCal, and the beaches, and the desert, and being close to Vegas.........

Hi, and welcome.

Be warned. If you meet Mr. Beanz, you will eventually do a century. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. That looks like a great bike to start on. :)

I'm another uber-clyde, but should be able to drop the "uber" very, very soon (by January, I'm hoping). :)

Hi Tom,

First off, welcome to the herd. As you stated, this group is for the most part, the exception that proves the rule when it comes to internet forums. Most of these folks are super helpful and supportive. I have a skinny buddy who has been lurking on here and he asked me yesterday if he could lie about his weight to be a part of this group. He was tired of the bravado and rudeness of some of the other forums. I told him that I was sorry, but we don't trust skinny people, so I couldn't let him in :p

btw..........Sweeeeeeeeeeet Bike!

You will not regret for a second, ever getting a better quality bike. I help a lot of neighbors and neighbors kids out and it amazes me at on cheap and non functional the parts are on these bikes.

good luck and welcome back

Nah, we let skinny folks in. They're like the rabbit on climbs, lol. One thing I have to admit is that of all teh things I have seen over in the Roadie forum is tht they have never dissed on the C&A forum. I have only seen poitive comments about making good life changing decisions. There are some statements of disbelief on wheel survival, but that's OK, lol.

Awesome bike. I have a Trek SU 2.0 which is a year or two earlier but close to the same thing. Very substantial bike with a very plush ride.

You're going to get addicted to it and want to do more than just add some exercise to your routine.

Nobody starts with the intention of doing a century. If you stick with it I'd bet you will be attempting a metric within a calendar year and an imperial within two calendar years.

Sweet looking bike you choose, it's like a 7.3fx with discs. Very snazzy! One thing for sure, when you do take er home we demand pics. Bonus points for Beanz style action shots.

Nobody does?!? I recall one "nobody" who did just that. :)

Very cool bike, the more you ride the more desire you will have to do a century. I am planning on having one completed by June. There is a tour de cure race here in South Florida in February. I am really thinking of some hardcore training and trying then.

The Kenback-1 would like to have a word with you, so would the Altair 8800 :D
