I was thinking of moving to philly, but all these crime reports are making me wonder how safe it is. I'm used to quite nice areas of Boston which are really safe. Is Philly really as bad a some of the reports say it is, I've heard people talk about the city being a complete ghetto.
To be honest I'd like to be living near the end of a subway line so that I can commute to work outside the city easily, but my g/f can get in to upenn area easily. Anyone of you Philly people know of any guides that tell you which areas to avoid, or more about what living in philly is like? Particularly if there is any info on how safe the area around UPenn is too.
Oh and If I move there this summer I might need a "cash in hand" job for a few months, any recommendations? Doesn't need to be high earning, just enough for food really.

Yeah I agree. I've been in Philly for awhile now and I rarely feel unsafe. Of course I'm always cautious and use common sense, especially when travelling at night. Even west Philly isn't SO bad. I wouldn't stroll around there at night counting my wad of Benjis, but I have gone shopping and out to eat there and I'm still in one piece.

I heard today that a drive by shooting was done by a guy on a bike here in K.C.
I didn't here it from an official source, so I don't know the validity of it yet.
Gee what is the world coming to anyway? :(

Wouldn't that be a pedal by shooting? Just wishing to clarify. :)

..being in center city/olde city is probably the preferred place to live... but prices are outrageous..I just moved out of olde city like 6 months ago... I'm in s. philly now... definiltey cheap and a decent neighborhood... queen village is closer to downtown and pretty nice... northern liberties is nice... fishtown is on par with south philly.. pretty 'up and coming'... manayunk is nice and very cost effective if you dont mind being like a 20-25 minute pedal from downtown... (very hilly though, not ideal for fixed ;) unless maybe you're used to san fran..haha)
if you're lookin to buy...let me know, I've got some realtor friends ;)
When I was a kid we would visit my cousins in surburban Melrose Park, PA (just north of Philly in Montgomery Co.). That is a very nice area (my late uncle was a doctor). The other parts of Philly I wasn't impressed with at all. West Philly made the worst places in Dayton look like Beverly Hills in comparison. The whole area seems so dreary and depressing to me. I'm sure the area may have changed since I've last visited in the '80's.

Well it looks more and more likely that I'll be moving to philly, I'll know for sure tomorrow night. I had a look at rents on craigslist, centre city did seem a lot more than most places, but then it was about the same as most places in boston. Seems like it would be a nice area to be in, I'm just concerned about how quickly I can get to allentown. Oh and I'm not looking to buy just yet, I may move again in a year so it seems I may as well wait til I'm more settled.
