Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. 5 more days of employment and one wake up and I am off on the retirement journey. A small bit of apprehension, but a lot of looking forward to biking when and where I want. Looking at a Specialized Roubaix at the LBS. But plenty of time to make up my mind now. :)

Sounds good to me, but I'm still lots of years away from retirement! Here's hoping you have a great time and get to ride your bike a whole lot of fun miles!

Hi Tim,
Best of luck to you.
I did that 3 years ago, and have been working 3 days/week, Tuesday-Thursday. It means 3 days on, 4 days off every week. Best thing I could have done!
Best regards, and once again, good luck.

If I could have worked out that kind of arrangement I may have continued working. 3 on and 4 off sounds wonderful. But then again 7 off and 7 off doesn't sound bad either. Will be doing some intermitent consulting, with a lot of teaching content from time to time, I like doing it and it will only be a few times per year, so I stay in touch with my profession and what is happening in it (I currently negotiate contracts with Labor Unions). With the new President elect there should be much to teach and a lot changing in the Labor Relations world.
And then of course the riding...........

Yoou'll enjoy it!
It's turned out to be the best job I ever had!
Good luck. I have to admit I'm envious...as someone with 3-5 years to go.

I'm still working (kind of) driving a school bus but I've got several retired friends. They tell me that they don't know how they used to get everything done. None says they ever wake in the morning and wish they could go into work.
Good for you. You owe it to yourself to enjoy life.:thumb:

Welcome to retired life. I'm aboaut 3 1/2 years into mine. I got called back for a few weeks last year. It convinced me I don't want to work anymore.

Congratulations:thumb:
I've been retired for a couple months and now wonder how I ever found the time to work.
I'm envious. My father informed me that he's now been retired for 25 years. I'll be in my late 70s before I can even begin to think about retirement. So, I've got another 20 years to go! Hence I must live by the creed: Enjoy each day, retired, working, or something else!
Congrats Tim and enjoy that new ride!

Congratulations.
My wife has 10 more working days and she too will be retired. That will give me more time to ride and maybe she'll get into riding, but I'm not holding my breath. :o

Timtouro,
Congradulations on retirement.:thumb:
I've got 4 months and 14 days still to go with 4 Board meetings to prepare for, no more budget development cycles, strategic plan retreats, levy campaigns and fund raisers. I'm not counting down quite yet since I have not subtracted out weekends, holidays, vacation days, bonus days off and possibly a couple sick days off. (I am in local government so I do get all those extra days off)

I'll have the magic combination of age and years of service in less than four years. I am determined to leave at that time although it will be a challenge to make the finances work. But whatever it takes, I intend to do it. The modern corporate world has never fit me well and it seems to fit me less each year.
Congratulations on your retirement. Since I retired I'm busier now than ever before.
I bought the Specialized Roubaix 13 months ago and it's a very comfortable bike. I think now, would be the best time to get a good deal on last years model. Anyway, good luck on your retirement and have fun.

I retired in 1997. I rode a bicycle as part of my work in a large chemical plant. Once retired it was the ONLY part of the job I missed. So after 3 years of retirement I bought a bicycle and rode it around the city. Then tried a rail trail. Then bought a used bicycle for the wife to join me. We quickly learned that ill fitting bikes are not that great on long rides. So I bought us a pair of matched Trek Navigator comfort bicycles. In doing this I created a monster! In 4 years we put 6,000 miles on the comfort bikes. Last year I picked up two hybrids to use a back up bikes.
Think of bicycles as pension insurance. I watched fellow workers retire. They did little more than sit in front of the tube and eat bad foods. A lot of them died 3 or 4 years into retirement from heart problems. When we tell people that we do 40 to 50 miles a day several times a week they just look at us. We are now 67 years old. My standard joke is that it would take several days to do that mileage with our walkers.
If you want your wife to join you on bicycle rides stress the health improvement points. But be prepared. If she is like my wife you will get few, if any, rest days.

W-O-R-K is a 4-letter word!
Been retired going on 14 years . . . do it as soon as you can.
Having your spouse join you biking is a great idea. We've been riding a tandem bike for 34 years.
Pedal on TWOgether!
