"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Hell has frozen over: Snow in SoCal.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My team manager, at his home in LAish, posted a picture of it snowing around them thar hills on Facebook.
How are you SoCal nancy-boys doing with the snow?
How many fender benders were you involved in, on the way into work? One? Two? Fifteen?
I'm looking forward to hearing allll about it.
Meanwhile, I'm headed out the door for a two hour ride in 14 degree temps. Wearing nothing but shoes and socks.

Me and some teammates got snowed on @ ~1800ft this last weekend in the SF bay area!! It was sunny in the valley below too... needless to say we were not dressed for the weather. The descent SUCKED.
Nothing but shoes? you should at least wear a helmet.. you never know... :D
You realize snowing in the mountains doesn't mean it's snowing in the cities, right? The mountains go up several thousand feet; on cold enough days the snow line gets pretty far down the mountains but not really into the cities. Last year I think we had snow at about 2,000 feet. Someone as a joke went up the mountains and shot a skiing video :p

It was 60 degrees in PA today. :D
(Sorry, there are few opportunities to gloat about PA winters...)

I plan on going on a ride roughly 3 blocks, take pictures of me and my bike in the snow, spamming it across the forums, and telling others to htfu.

I'm gearing up and having my mom take pictures of me riding outside in nothing but bibs, socks, shoes, and a scarf, just to mock our Nancy-boy manager/teammate.
The funny thing is that I rode in shorts yesterday; it was 35 degrees warmer.

I was in Chicago about 2 weeks ago and it is FN freezing. In Reno we get down to the low teens or single digits(rare) with snow but when it was 15 degrees and blowing wind in Chicago I have never felt so cold. Props to ya DOK.

It snowed when I was driving to Bakersfield from the LA airport. It was up in the hills too.

Wow snow in SoCal! Amazing, all the time I spent skiing at Baldy, Big Bear and Wrightwood (all located in SoCal) it must have been a special effect.

It snows pretty regularly here, it's just that it usually stays above 3000' (because we have real mountains, in addition to awesome weather). I've built snowmen (18" high and in danger of being crushed by a dwarf, but snowmen nonetheless) within a few miles of my house, while it was quite pleasant to be outside at home.
I used to ride year round in Mpls. 14 is balmy. I had to ride home plenty of times in the middle of the night when it was -40, naked and with my bare feet on sharpened rat-trap pedals. When I did finally get a car I had to keep an extra bike at work for when the battery got too cold to start (AAA doesn't come on those days, because there are 200,000 dead batteries in the twin cities).

My girlfriend keeps pushing me to carry skis on our backs and ride up baldy and ski. Entirely doable, if a bit of a deathmarch with the skis on your back. I'd want to get relatively light tele stuff before I do that.
I have ridden up baldy into snow plenty of times.

Snow in the mountains and deserts around the LA area is normal, and rarely reaches the big cities like umd said. It's the rain than drivers in the city can't stand.

I agree some Calif. drivers freak out when it rains but we should be back to 80 degree temps next week.. The thing I love about so cal is that I can be at the Beach, Mountains or Desert in 45 minutes, how about you guys and gals..
BTW I live near Mt. Baldy which is over 10,000 feet so looks like I may be skiing tomorrow, only a 15 minute drive..

All the time...there are some great climbs in the San Fernando and San Gabriel mountains. Last Jan my teammates and I did the final stage of the ToC plus some extra climbing, 9300ft for the day. Epic.

The hard part is not riding up with the ski's on your back, but skiing down with a bike on your back. For someone like me who is given to teli-flopping right over the front, skiing with a large, awkward, sharp metal thing on your back is just not the time for teli's.
Randonee bindings, now that's where it's at.

Here's the view of Saddleback (Santa Ana Mtns) from our shop roof this morning. We're only a few miles east of the beach. This doesn't happen in Orange County!! If it sticks for a day or two, I'll try and get out there on my mtn bike.

I've seen snow in Los Angeles. The city, not the mountians. About 20 years ago we got quite a bit (by tropical standards). I'd say between 1 and 2 inches. But in all fell at night and by early morning it had turned to rain and it was slush that I was walking through to my car.
People I went to college with report that their parents told them and have pictures of real levels of snow in Eagle Rock (A very short bike ride form the Rose Bowl) sometime in the 1930s. Enough that the kids were sleding.
I've seen Snow in the summer in the local Mountians. Rather strange to be walking along a nice trail only to come on several feet of snow. Shade on hte Norht side of a mountian will do that.

I rode up Hwy 39 to the snow on Memorial Day weekend this year. I'll ride in snow this weekend as well. I can see it from my front door right now.
Saddleback looks great today.
It's pretty damn cold. Our 8am ride tomm. is going to be rather brisk. It was 40 something when I went to work this a.m....ugh.
