Great Lakes - Which one of these rides do you prefer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone who did the Horribly Hilly Hundred and Dairyland Dare, what ride did you like better and why?I want to do one of theses rides next year,I don't know if my schedule will allow for both.
i have done both, but only once for each. however, i have ridden up in that area several times with some other BFNIC'ers. i did the 200k for each and thought the DD was harder. despite all the pain and suffering it put me through i liked the DD better.
reasons for this:
--it was harder.
--easier to register
--better rest stops
--better schwag
--Shop Hill Rd
--later in the year
hope that helps. later.

I definitely prefer the Dairyland Dare. No mass start, really good rest stops, later in the year, and every bit as hard as the Horribly Hilly (I've completed the 100K for each and came in 20 miles short of the 200K at the Dairyland Dare this year.) The DLD is very challenging but seems slightly more laid-back than the HHH.
If you can't do the registration cost of either the HHH or the DLD try the Wright Stuff Century (www.bombaybicycle.org)- which is a very well run challenging hilly century in the same area and a bargain.

i'll vouch for the DD as well, even though i haven't ridden the HHH yet. it's a superbly organized ride and hopefully Stewart will be putting on a ride for 2009

The DD is a much better ride than the HHH. Best part is that you don't have to take a morning off of work and hit "refresh" every 3 seconds during the 2 hours it takes to register if you try to do the HHH....assuming you are even able to get in that is....
...worthless.

+1 :thumb:
I ride the HHH course (PDF on their website) as training a few times a year.
As I prefer cooler weather, the DD adds the "beat the heat" aspect too.
hopefully Stewart will be putting on a ride for 2009
Looks like its the DD for me,but whats this about Stewart?
When and how often do you guys get together and go up there to train?

Stu sent out a lot of e-mails last year about how the ride was either going to lose money again, or be uttely bankrupt or something like that...implying or either outright stating he may not run the ride again.
Too bad too. There is plenty of traffic on that ride to make it extremely successful- in my opinion - but it would most likely require cutting out some of the nicer perks that Stu put in.

I have done both and DD gets my vote:thumb:

I have not done the Hilly primarily because of scheduling. It always seems to not work in my schedule. What I don't like about it (even though I've never ridden it:D) is how early it is in the season.
I love that the Dare can be sort of that end of the season culminating butt kicking ride before I go back to school (I'm a teacher; it's always the weekend before we start back) and I feel at my best to tackle it.
I finished the 200k this year. Nothing but good to say about this ride. I just love it. I also hesitate to promote it too much....yes, I know Stu needs more people....but I love that it ends up being a rather solitary ride at least on the 200k. Just me and one challenging hill after another.

Has anyone asked Stu if there is going to be a DD this year?
He indicated to us after the ride in person that it would go on. He told me that all the volunteers insist as well. They love helping out with this ride.

Perfect.
I love both of these rides.
The HHH has a ton more people, but even the folks who wrote in for the lottery got in last year.
The roads in the HHH are in better condition than the DLD for the most part.
The 100k of the HHH is in my mind more difficult than the 100k DLD.
Volunteering for the HHH was a lot of fun last year.
Having a meal at the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb the night before is a blast.
The HHH finishes with the epic ride up to the top of Blue Mound.
The DLD is fantastic, too, but it has a few more roads that are gravelly.
Do the 200k and you can climb Roberts Road twice.
Shop Hill Road is wicked hard.
Having a meal in Mineral Point the night before is a blast.
Cool schwag like pint glasses.
If you can, ride them both. If you can't, then ride the DLD (if it's still around in 2009) and show up for the 2nd Annual CyLowe Double or Nothing Metric in late May, which will cost you nothing but your own sweat and self support. Details forthcoming on that wonderful ride.
BTW, I think Stewart put something out in an email saying he wants to add a full 200 mile route for the DLD. Straight up epic.
Thanks guys and gal(SmokinMiles),for all of the info.Looking foward to riding with your group next year.
